2016 Cross Country Running
Dear Allenby Families,
We are pleased to see that many of our students are eager to sign-up for our Cross Country team. We are looking forward to a fun and successful effort at our meet at Earl Bales Park on Monday, October 17th. For the grade 3s and up who qualify the Conference Final is on Friday, Oct. 21st. In preparation for our meet, students will practice on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday mornings at 8:15 a.m. The first practice will take place on Wednesday, September 21st. All students are to meet in the schoolyard promptly at 8:15 for attendance and a warm-up, followed by their run. Students in each grade will be training for different run distances. On race day, grade 1s & 2s will run approximately 1 km. Students in grade 3 will run 1.5 km, and students in grades 4-6 will run 2 km.
Grade 1 & 2 students will train by running clockwise on the Allenby track. Students in grade 3-6 will run clockwise around the block with a group. They will meet their parent escorts at 8:15 SHARP at the St.Clements gates to the yard. They must sign-in to indicate that they are present, and when the group has assembled, they will depart together for the run.
We still require parent volunteers to escort students on practice runs. Parent runners, please come and help out! Parents who do not wish to run, but can help out can supervise at various points on the block or ride alongside on bicycles. We must ensure adequate supervision for students while running, therefore, practices cannot happen without the support of our parent volunteers.
Please note that for safety reasons, only children who are signed-up and who return their permission forms are permitted to participate in the meet.

On race day, grade 1 and 2 students will be driven to the meet by volunteer parent drivers, and will return to school by lunch hour. Students in grades 3-6 will take be escorted to Bathurst Street where we will take the TTC to Earl Bales Park. The TDSB's change of bus companies has created a shortage of bus drivers and therefore it was impossible to book a school bus. We will remain at the park until the races have finished and then return to school by bus (approx. 2:30 pm). Bring a lunch, water , spare socks, etc. If you wish to make alternative travel arrangements for your child, you MUST inform the coaches in writing, indicating who will be responsible for your child’s transportation and supervision, contact information and the details of the arrangement.
We are asking for $8 from each runner in order to cover team transportation costs.
Allenby is becoming a cash-less school. Once the system is set up we will collect the $8 through the accounts which will be set up. By signing the permission form (found on the 1st page of the Allenby Sports section on this website) you are agreeing to pay at a later date.
During the week of September 20th, please sign and return a permission form to Mr. Osborne or another teacher during morning practice). We will require many parent volunteers to supervise groups of students as well as to carpool grade 1 students on race day. If you are available to help out, please indicate this on the permission form and include an email address.
