Halloween

Every Halloween, staff and students at EYA dress up in costumes and make the most of the day as a community playing games, carving pumpkins, baking treats, and getting into the spirit of the day.

Health and Wellness Day

In December, we hold our annual health and wellness day for the students of EYA. Workshops on a variety of topics are held, including on yoga, mental health, and boxing.

Students Visit EYA For Silkscreening

EYA art students often host silkscreening workshops for students from other elementary and high schools.

Basketball Tournament

EYA participates in the Alt9 Annual Basketball Tournament, hosted at a different Alt9 school each year.

School Gardening Event

Every spring, the whole school takes some time to clean up the front by planting, weeding, and clearing out the collected brush and garbage.  This is usually followed by veggies, watermelon, and pizza, as modelled below...

Women's Self Defence

A Wen-do workshop is an annual event.  Here are the impressions of one student after taking the workshop for the first time:

"My first reaction to Wen-do was surprise.  We sat in a circle with the instructor, Deb Chard, and talked about our experiences with harassment.  She emphasized that violence towards women is a societal issue, not an individual one.  We are not to blame when we become targets of harassment or bodily harm.  Deb helped us understand how we can verbally dismiss potential attacks.  We then learned practical and easy to pick up techniques to physically fend for ourselves.  She also made it entertaining and fun.  I left the session feeling a bit angry about what women have to face on a day to day basis, but I also felt empowered because I learned something valuable.  I now feel more prepared should anything ever happen."  – Lily M (student)

Mental Health Awareness Week

For the first full week in May, EYA hosted a number of activities and workshops for Mental Health Awareness Week. These activities included a mental health scavenger hunt, beading and origami workshops, workshops on building healthy relationships and on dealing with substance abuse, and a play session with a choice of an outdoor activity (basketball) or indoor games (hosted by Snakes & Lattes). A great week!

End of Year BBQ

Towards the end of every school year, we hold a bbq where we share food, some laughs, and - hopefully - some good weather! The highlight of this year was the awesome Syrian food and the egg-and-spoon races...

Alt9 Prom

Every year, the Alt9 Schools host a prom for all the graduates from our family of alternative schools. For the past few years, it has been held at the Great Hall.
