Compass Orienteering

While participating In our Compass Orienteering program, learners are introduced to the compass and how to use it to find ones way.  Once they are proficient at reading a bearing, dialing it in, and following it's arrow, learners are challenged to complete a specified course in a timed and scored orienteering event.

Curriculum expectations introduced/reviewed:
Grade 5 Mathematics - Geometry and Spatial Sense
1. Locate an object using the cardinal directions and a coordinate system
2. Measure and construct angles up to 90 degrees

1. Construct related lines using angle properties and a variety of tools

GPS Orienteering (STEM)

Moving beyond basic map reading, learners are taught skills necessary to use a GPS unit and are then challenged to locate markers posted around the exterior of the Centre. This activity requires students to work in small groups to navigate their assigned route.

Score Orienteering

While participating in our Score Orienteering program, our students are taught map reading skills and are then challenged to locate markers posted around the exterior of the Centre. This activity requries students to work in small groups to navigate their assigned route.

Sense of Place Hike (STEM)

While hiking through the Albion Hills Conservation Area, learners are introduced to the history and geography of the region and the significance of the Oak Ridges Moraine. Students are introduced to the geographical inquiry themes of "location/place, environment and region". Maps, and how to read them, are also a central theme.
