Welcome to Kindergarten!
On behalf of the staff and students, we would like to take this opportunity to welcome you and your child to Ecole Glen Park Public School. This is an exciting time for young children as they anticipate starting school. They will have many opportunities to make new friends, develop and enhance their literacy and numeracy skills, learn how to cooperate, listen and share. They will be encouraged and supported to develop independent skills such as dressing themselves and being responsible for their belongings and behaviour. To help you prepare your child as they begin this important life journey and readiness for school, we are pleased to provide you with some materials below.
Kindergarten children attend school from 8:30 am to 3:00 pm. Kindergarten teachers are on duty in the kindergarten play area at entry and dismissal. All kindergarten children should enter and exit the school by the kindergarten play area. Your promptness in picking up your child is much appreciated.
Change of Routine
Sometimes arrangements for your child's pick-up may change. Please notify the teacher in writing or speak to the teacher before school so that she feels secure sending your child with another person.
Clothing & Footwear
Outdoor play is an important part of the kindergarten program. Appropriate outdoor clothing is essential for the comfort and safety of your child, especially on sunny days and during the winter months. Please ensure your child is dressed for the weather.
It is recommended that every child have an extra set of clothing, (i.e. shirt, pants, underwear, socks), to be kept at school in the event of a washroom accident. Please send the clothing to school in a plastic bag clearly marked with your child's name as soon as possible.
In the interest of safety, comfort and hygiene, children are required to wear shoes at all times when indoors. During the winter months, each child should have a pair of running shoes to be left at school. Running shoes with velcro, rather than laces, are much easier for the children to manage.
Clothing and footwear should be clearly labeled with your child's name. The kindergarten classes each have their own Lost and Found boxes for all those items that appear to have escaped their owners. However, articles not claimed by the end of each term will be removed.
Updated Student Information
Please notify your child's teacher as soon as possible regarding any pertinent health/medical information or social/personal information that may pertain to your child.
Please click here for more information about the school's snack program.
Special Helper Days
Each day one of the children has the responsibility of being the special helper. Special helpers take the attendance folder to the office, lead lines and make choices first. Your child will be notified ahead of time as to when it is his/her day to be the special helper.
Each class has weekly visits to the school library. Your child will be allowed to take a library book home. You are strongly encouraged to take a few minutes to read and discuss the book with your child. Please encourage your child to return the book on library day so it can be exchanged for another one.
It is recommended that every child have a backpack or some type of school bag big enough to carry his/her snack, library book, work, etc. Please ensure that the school bag chosen is easy for your child to manage. It is important that a daily routine of carrying the bag to school and emptying its contents be established.
Toys from Home
Children are discouraged from bringing toys form home. We cannot guarantee against loss or damage.
Reporting to Parents
For junior kindergarten students, parent-teacher conferences are held at the end of first term, and if necessary, at the end of second term. There is a written summary form at the end of second term and a written progress report for junior kindergarten students at the end of the year.
For senior kindergarten students, there are written progress reports at the end of first and third term. Parent-teacher conferences for children in senior kindergarten are held at the end of first term, and if necessary, at the end of the second term.
We invite parents to volunteer in their child's classroom. Please let your child's teacher know if you wish to assist with our activities at any time.
In our Kindergarten, we try hard to:
- Be good listeners. (Remember one person speaks at a time.)
- Share the toys and materials with others.
- Raise our hand to speak during circle times.
- Always use good manners.
- Put things back where they belong.
- Use our walking feet and quiet voices indoors.
- Use words to solve problems.
- Be a good friend.
- Always try our best.
If you should have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact us at the school (416-395-2460). The best times to reach the kindergarten teachers are before 8:15 a.m., from 11:30 to 12:00 noon, or after 3:00 p.m.
Looking forward to working with you. Thank you in advance for your cooperation and support.
