EcoSchools

"If it can’t be reduced, reused, repaired, rebuilt, refurbished, refinished, resold, recycled or composted, then it should be restricted, redesigned or removed from production."
Pete Seeger

Hillside is a Platinum EcoCentre.

Ever look out the window on a nice day and dream about what fun it would be to hold a class outside? Your students probably feel the same way! Why not venture outside and develop new skills to expand your student’s knowledge while exploring the wonders of nature.  Platinum Eco-Schools Seal

We encourage you to explore your schoolyard, local neighbourhood, park or ravine. Be prepared to help your students make connections to their local environments, developing a ‘sense of place’ is an important component of a child’s development. For EcoSchools Certification, Hillside can help you with these sections of the Self-Assessment;

3.1 Does the school maximize the potential of its school ground for diverse learning opportunities for students
(e.g., through lessons that develop observation skills, mapping, use patterns by using outdoor classrooms and trees, developing learning trails)?

3.6 To what extent do teachers tap the potential of environmental issues to build active citizenship skills as part of their learning
(e.g., engage students in school greening and decision-making inside and outside the school through goal-setting, planning, fund-raising, and/or implementing projects; send letters to national and community newspapers; write, e-mail or call elected officials, monitor energy use and sorting of waste, engage in programs such as Plant Watch, Worm Watch, and Frog Watch)?
