Hodgson Middle School, September 2017

The recommendation of the Program Area Review Team (PART) for the Yonge-Eglinton Review was that Hodgson Senior Public School become a Grade 6 to 8 middle school (English and Extended French streams). As a result of the grade change, the school name will change to Hodgson Middle School. This was approved by the Board in February 2016.

Also, the Ministry of Education has provided the Board with a grant of $5.84M under their Capital Priorities Program to support a 12-classroom addition at Hodgson Sr. PS. This grant will provide accommodation relief to the school in the form of 276 additional pupil places.

An Update on the Hodgson Addition

Please take a moment to read this update on the Hodgson Addition provided by Trustee Laskin.

Update on Portable Layout

We have been allocated six portables to support the transition to Hodgson Middle School in September 2017. The original plan was to place the portables in a north-south line on the west border or the field, which allowed for student entry/exit to and from the school and ensured that our field could still be used for phys. ed. programming as well as extra-curriculars

Unfortunately the north-south line configuration is just not possible.  To accommodate the six portables, TDSB staff have created a new configuration, which is five portables in a north-south line and one portable on the north border of our field. This configuration support our goals of student entry/exit and also use of the field.

If you want to see how this will look, TDSB staff have provided us with a drawing of the portable layout.

Update on Grade 6 Rec Program

The Boys and Girls Club of West Scarborough held a registration at Hodgson Senior Public School to gauge the interest in an after-school recreational program. Unfortunately, they only received 3 registrations, which is not enough for them to run a program.

Grade 6 Rec Program Registration

The TDSB is committed to offering extended day programs where there is sufficient need. In order to determine the level of need for our families at Hodgson in September 2017, we have completed a survey of our parents who have a child currently in Grade 5 at our feeder schools.

The results of the survey determined that there is not a sufficient level of need to have a Before and After School program at Hodgson Middle School in September 2017. We are, however, looking at the options that may be available for those who expressed a need for an extended day program.

We are currently working with The Boys and Girls Club of West Scarborough to explore the possibility of providing an after-school recreational program for Grade 6 students at Hodgson MS in September 2017.

The Boys and Girls Club of West Scarborough will be holding a registration at Hodgson Senior Public School for the after-school recreational program on Wednesday, June 7th, 2017 from 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Registration forms and information went home to families of our Grade 5 students last week. A recreational program will only run if there is a firm commitment (registration and fee deposit) from enough parents. We will provide more information when it is available.

Visits to Grade 5 and 6 Classes

As part of our transition plan for Hodgson Middle School, we committed to visiting our new students in their current classroom before the end of the school year.

During May, visited the grade 5 and 6 classes of Oriole Park and Maurice Cody. We brought former students who spoke to about life at Hodgson. We also discussed the transition to Hodgson Middle School and answered any questions the students had. (They had great questions.)

It was a great leadership opportunity for our grade 7 students (who were amazing and who will be middle school mentors in September) as well as wonderful face to face introduction to our soon to be Grade 6 and Grade 7 students. We are looking forward to visiting our students at Davisville and Eglinton early in June.

After-School Supervision

The supervision currently in place will be the same when we are a Middle School.

At the end of the day, our staff supervise the yard for 15 minutes after the dismissal of students from classes (we called this Yard Duty). At the end of those 15 minutes, staff ask the students to go to their next place where they are being supervised. This of course does not apply to the clubs or teams being supported at the school as there are teachers supervising those events after school hours.

We want our current, new and/or returning families and students to know that there is no supervision of the school yard after the 15 minute yard duty ends.

An Update on Before and After School Programs

The TDSB is committed to offering extended day programs where there is sufficient need. In order to determine the level of need for our families at Hodgson in September 2017, we have completed a survey of our parents who have a child currently in Grade 5 at our feeder schools.

The results of the survey determined that there is not a sufficient level of need to have a Before and After School program at Hodgson in September 2017. We will, however, work with TDSB staff to explore the options that may be available for those who expressed a need for an extended day program. We will provide more information as it becomes available.

Grade 5 and 6 Student Visits

Grade 5 and 6 students from our feeder schools are scheduled to Hodgson on May 4, 2017. The visit will be similar to our Middle School Transition Night that we hosted on February 2, 2017. Students will come to Hodgson with their class and teachers. They will have a chance to hear presentations about Hodgson by students and staff. At the end of the session, students will return to their schools with their classes and teachers. They will also have a student-guided tour of Hodgson.

Here is the schedule for the day:

May 4, 9:30 am to 11:00 am: Cody and Eglinton visiting Hodgson
May 4, 1:00 pm to 2:30 pm: Davisville and Oriole Park visiting Hodgson

School Council Meet & Greet Visits

We have completed all of our Meet and Greet visits with the School Advisory Councils of our feeder schools. Thank you to the Principals/Vice-Principals, Council members and parents who came to meet us. We are looking forward to having you at our council meetings next year!

The Yonge-Eglinton Review

A Program Area Review Team (PART) was established to examine and address existing and projected accommodation needs as a result of increasing enrolment and space constraints at a number of schools in the area. The PART worked through the 2015-2016 school year to provide recommendations to the Board.

If you would like more information or have some questions, please visit the TDSB's 2015 Yonge-Eglinton Program Area Review Information website.
