Three programs are run from the school: a FDK to Grade 6 public school day program that services both the Island and Harbourfront community, a residential outdoor education program for visiting students in Grades 5 and 6, and the Gibralter Point Day Nursery (pre-school aged daycare.
Students attending the Island Public Day School are transported to the school by ferry and school bus. Students attending the outdoor education program are from city schools and spend 3 days and 2 nights at the Island School: living in dorms, and studying natural science and outdoor education.
The school was built in 1999 with an environmental focus. The building includes a general purpose room, library/resource centre, science labs, gymnasium, dining hall, and greenhouse. The school is also equipped with solar panels and photovoltaic panels.
