The fundamental purpose of the business studies program is to provide students with the knowledge, skills and attitudes necessary to achieve success in secondary school, the workplace, post-secondary education and daily life.  Business studies courses at Martingrove provide our students with a focus on experiential learning.  Most courses are taught in full computer labs using the latest technology available.

INFORMATION & COMMUNICATION TECHNOLOGY

BTT1O -  Introduction To Information Technology In Business (Grade 9)

An absolute must for all grade nine students!  Working in state-of-the-art computer labs, students are learning the newest computer technology, developing research skills (using the Internet, textbooks, newspapers, periodicals, etc.), learning efficient use of software application programs such as spreadsheets, desktop publishing, databases and word processing (using Microsoft Office products) and developing the skills which will assist them in high school projects in all subject areas.

Students will be preparing reports, letters, business cards, flyers, slide presentations, designing web pages, and creating many other important documents.  They will also be learning correct English usage, how to manage and edit files and use electronic communication technology correctly.  In doing this they will develop an attention to detail and learn how to effectively work in a group setting - mandatory skills in today’s classroom and today’s workplace! 


INTRODUCTION TO BUSINESS

 BBI2O - Introduction To Business (Grade 10)

Introduction to Business allows students to become familiar with business operations in Canada and abroad, and promotes an active interest in the role of business in today’s economy.  Students will also learn about personal finance, franchising, business careers and computer applications in business.

The business textbook is supplemented with Internet research and participation in business simulations like online stock market simulations.  Access to computer labs enriches the course and makes course materials as current as possible.“In this course you will learn how to make $1-Million by the time you are 65!”


ACCOUNTING

BAF3M - Introduction to Financial Accounting (Grade 11)
Introductory accounting covers the complete accounting cycle from the source documents through the journals to the completed financial statements.  Concepts and theories of accounting for service and merchandising businesses are studied.  Includes case studies and computer assisted accounting.  This course is a MUST for anyone considering a commerce programme in university or college.

BAT4M - Principles of Financial Accounting  (Grade 12)

Emphasis is on the study of accounting principles related to financial statements.  Students will learn how these statements are used in making business decisions and their effect on methods of inventory valuation and adjusting and reversing entries.  Financing of a business and analysis of annual reports are included.  Students will complete accounting simulations and use accounting software. (Prerequisite: BAF3M)

ENTREPRENEURIAL STUDIES

BDI3C - Introduction to Entrepreneurial Studies  (Grade 11)
This course focuses on ways in which entrepreneurs recognize opportunities, generate ideas, and organize resources to plan successful ventures that enable them to achieve their personal goals by satisfying the needs of others.  Students will learn about values, traits, and skills most often associated with successful entrepreneurial activity.

INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS

BBB4M - Introduction to International Business (Grade 12)
This course provides an overview of the importance of international business and trade in the global economy and explores the factors that influence success in international markets. Students will learn about proper techniques and strategies associated with marketing, distribution, and management in an international business.         

FINANCIAL SECURITIES
IDC4U - Interdisciplinary Studies - Financial Securities (Grade 12)
This course aims to develop the skill required to become an “Interpreneur,” that is Interdisciplinary Entrepreneurs, applying processes and problem solving skills to the study of financial management, capital markets and the ways in which capital is acquired.  Students will interconnect knowledge of English, Accounting, Economics, Law, Entrepreneurship and Media.  They will use diverse information skills, resources and technologies to gather information related to a variety of Canadian and international financial institutions, investigate how to increase net worth and examine investments in stock markets.  This course makes use of many simulations including online stock market simulations and a simulated financial plan for a real client!  (Prerequisite:  any Grade 11 ‘U’ course.)

Five Critical Areas of Learning in All Business Studies Courses

The business studies curriculum in Grades 9 to 12 offers a range of courses, all built on the belief that effective learning in all subjects of the discipline depends on the development of knowledge and skills in five critical areas: business skills; communication in a business environment; digital literacy; financial literacy; and ethical, moral, and legal considerations in business.\

Many MCI Business Studies student engage in extra-curricular activities to help put into practice the theory taught in the classroom.

DECA

At DECA students do case competitions in multiple business-related specialties, eventually competing against students from other schools.  The club meets every Wednesday and Thursday at lunch.
