Aims of the Department

  • to foster an appreciation of how past and present individuals and events have shaped our global and Canadian societies
  • to provide students with opportunities to analyse local, national, and global issues, and relate these issues to their daily lives
  • to teach problem solving and critical thinking skills
  • to develop research and literacy skills in our students using a variety of methods including the latest technology
  • to understand that our place on this planet, past, present and future is intrinsically linked to the environment through a variety of human systems
  • to develop the moral capacity to evaluate human actions in order to promote responsible stewardship of the planet and its inhabitants.

Martingrove’s History department offers a wide variety of courses, ranging from Ancient Civilisations to Psychology to Canadian and World Politics to Philosophy, to name a few. The History department also provides the school with Mock Elections, International Field Trips every second year, rousing debates, an Advanced Placement course, and excellent preparation for University and College. The Martingrove History department is more than just a department, it is a way to the future, historically speaking.
