If you are new to Canada and want to improve your spoken or written English, SCAS offers a variety of credit ESL courses to help you. Our packages provide an immersion experience that promotes the development of oral and written English and strengthens English reading proficiency.  Based on the assessment done at orientation, you will be placed in a program that meets your language needs and prepares you to meet your goals. 

 

Please note that recommendation for a package is based on your SCAS language assessment.

PACKAGE A – ESL Level One and Grade 9 Drama

2 Credits / 4 Hrs Daily

ESLAO introduces you to the English language and helps you adapt to life and study in Canada.  In this course, you will develop conversation skills, add to your English vocabulary, and learn to write simple sentences. 

This course is paired with ADA1O.  This drama course will familiarize you with real-life Canadian speaking situations.  You will write dialogues about day-to-day experiences and use role play to practice your pronunciation in a variety of creative ways.  You will gain confidence in speaking in front of and with others in a variety of situations.

 


PACKAGE B – ESL Level Two and Drama 9 Geography

2 Credits / 4 Hrs Daily

ESLBO extends your English language skills for everyday and academic purposes.  In this course, you will expand your knowledge of grammar and sentence types and compose different kinds of paragraphs. 

This course is paired with CGC1P.  This grade 9 Canadian Geography course is an Ontario Secondary School Diploma requirement.  It allows ESLB students to develop an understanding of Canada's geography and teaches different spatial skills including mapping and graphing, and concepts of Geographic thinking that will help improve their critical thinking across different subjects.  

 

 

PACKAGE C – ESL Level Four and Grade 11 Public Speaking OR Grade 11 Drama

2 Credits / 4 Hrs Daily

ESLCO begins to develop your English language skills to prepare you for mainstream English studies.  In this course, you will expand your knowledge of grammar and paragraphing to create longer and more complex works such as letters, narratives, and reports.  In this course, students learn valuable information about Canadian citizenship and diversity.

This course is paired with either EPS3O or ADA3O.  EPS3O is a grade 11 public speaking course that teaches students about different kinds of presentations and how to make presentations effectively.  ADA3O is a grade 11 dramatic arts course that teaches students different dramatic forms and requires students to create longer dramatic works.  Both courses foster stronger speaking and listening skills and help students to work together for common purposes.



PACKAGE D – ESL Level Three and Grade 10 History

2 Credits / 4 Hrs Daily

ESLDO helps you develop greater fluency and accuracy in classroom and social situations, and greater readiness to participate in Canadian society as an informed citizen.  In this course, you will focus on reading more complex English texts and on writing different academic texts, including essays. 

This course is paired with CHC2P.  This grade 10 Canadian History course is an Ontario Secondary School Diploma requirement.  It allows ESLD students to develop an understanding of Canada's history from World War I to the present day and teaches concepts of Historical thinking that will further develop their critical thinking across different subjects.

 

 

ESL Level Five

1 Credit / 2 Hrs Daily

ESLEO is the final offering in the English as a Second Language program.  It helps you to consolidate your language skills so that you can succeed independently on a variety of academic tasks.  You will study, analyze, and respond to longer readings; develop research essays by means of the recursive writing process; and prepare and make presentations on a variety of academic and social issues.
