How have Canada's connections with Asia contributed to our identity as a nation? Students use a variety of maps, graphs and photographs to investigate this question with an eye to continuity and change in Toronto's Chinatown II (Spadina and Dundas).

The morning is spent at the TUSC IT Lab looking at trade, immigration and cultural connections with Asia and how they have a strong influence on Canada.

In the afternoon, students visit Chinatown II (Spadina and Dundas) and, in teams of 2, use our Android tablets to mark waypoints and photograph “Signs of Asia” in Toronto.

Your class will get a web page (on our server) to view the results for each team. Their work can be downloaded as a CSV file, and as a Google Earth file.

Using the Google Earth file, your students can create a "tour" that visits each of the locations to see the photos they've taken; the tour can have an audio commentary, perhaps explaining why they took each photo. In lieu of audio, they can add text to each location explaining their reason.

Please Note: TUSC’s IT Lab is fully accessible for students in wheelchairs; contact TUSC for more information.
