Michael V. Sefton

Professor Michael V. Sefton is Director of the Institute of Biomaterials and Biomedical Engineering at the University of Toronto. He is also a Professor in the Department of Chemical Engineering and Applied Chemistry. He grew up in Toronto, graduated from Vaughan Road Collegiate Institute in 1967, and was educated at the University of Toronto (B.A.Sc., 1971) and at M.I.T. (Sc.D., 1974). He has been at the University of Toronto since 1974.

In 1992 he was the recipient of the teaching award of the Faculty of Applied Science and Engineering and numerous awards from both Canadian and American organizations in recognition of his contributions to research related to chemical engineering applied to medicine, tissue engineering and biomaterials. He was one of twenty given a Century of Achievement Award by the Canadian Society for Chemical Engineering in 1999. He has pioneered the development of artificial organs using tissue engineering and is spearheading the LIFE initiative, a global program to create an unlimited supply of vital organs (heart, liver, and kidney) to address the donor organ shortage
