Mira Friedlander

Mira Friedlander began her theatre work in high school at Vaughan Road Collegiate, where she acted and was an enthusiastic participant in original dramatic creations. Building on this experience, she studied theatre at York University.

Subsequently, her work in the theatre flourished in many different ways: working with the education community as a workshop leader and script developer; teaching theatre appreciation courses to adults through the Continuing Studies Program at the University of Toronto; adjudicating high school and community theatre performances for a variety of associations, notably the Sears Ontario Drama Festival but also the Newfoundland and Labrador Festival, the Kiwanis Festival, the Theatre Ontario Provincial Showcase, the Ontario Multicultural Festival, and the Association of Community Theatres; acting on the community theatre circuit; directing for the Women’s Drama Collective; consulting for both the Ontario and Toronto arts councils; and writing as both a journalist and critic for such publications as Variety, The Toronto Star, The Globe and Mail, the National Post, and most of Toronto’s major arts publications.

She was a board member of the Canadian Theatre Critics Association, a member of the International Theatre Institute (English Language Centre) and the International Association of Theatre Critics, as well as a jury member for the Chalmers Play Award and the Dora Mavor Moore Award.

As a journalist she also wrote on a number of other topics, particularly in the areas of travel, health, and lifestyle. She was heard regularly as an arts broadcaster on Classical 96 FM radio station.

Mira Friedlander won two Nathan Cohen Awards for excellence in theatre criticism and was honoured with a Harold Award for her work promoting the Toronto independent theatre community. She is listed in the International Writers and Authors Who’s Who.
