Computer Science & Arts based Computer Courses

Woburn Computer Science Department

The computer science department offers four different courses that touch almost every aspect of computer science. Everything from software, hardware and the correlation with metaphysics. Read all the course outlines below to see which one (or more) is the right one for you.

Courses offered by the department

ICS2O- Grade 10 Computer Science [open level]
Course Description:

This course introduces students to computer programming. Students will plan and write simple computer programs by applying fundamental programming concepts, and learn to create clear and maintainable internal documentation. They will also learn to manage a computer by studying hardware configurations, software selection, operating system functions, networking and safe computing practices. Students will also investigate the social impact of computer technologies and develop an understanding of environmental and ethical issues related to the use of computers.

ICS3U- Grade 11 Computer Science [university level]
Course Description:

This course introduces students to computer science. Students will design software independently and as part of a team, using industry-standard programming tools and applying the software development life-cycle model. They will also write and use subprograms within computer programs. Students will develop creative solutions for various types of problems as their understanding of the computing environment grows. They will also explore environmental and ergonomic issues, emerging research in computer science, and global career trends in computer-related fields.

ICS4U- Grade 12 Computer Science [university level]
Course Description:

This course enables students to further develop knowledge and skills in computer science. Students will use modular design principles to create complex and fully documented programs, according to industry standards. Student teams will manage large software development project, from planning through to project review. Students will also analyze algorithms for effectiveness. They will investigate ethical issues in computing and further explore environmental issues, emerging technologies, areas of research in computer science, and careers in the field.

SCIALL (IDC4UP): Grade 12 Interdisciplinary Studies [university level]
Course Description:

Most essential questions humans ask are interdisciplinary in nature. This course will help students develop and consolidate the skills required for and knowledge of different subjects and disciplines to solve problems, make decisions, create personal meaning and present findings beyond the scope of a single subject or discipline. Students will apply the principles and process of inquiry and research. They will also assess their own cognitive and effective strategies, apply general skills in both familiar and new context, create innovative products and create new knowledge. The teacher in this course is seen as a facilitator of discussions and learning and not a unique source of the information. Students will explore various school subjects, specifically in Computer Science, Mathematical Logic and Metaphysics. Computer Science and Mathematical Logic will focus on reasoning skills and theories as opposed to actual computing. Metaphysics, namely Ontology, is concerned with explaining the ultimate nature of being and the world. Humans specialize in various disciplines in isolation without seeing a connection between them; without seeing that the whole is more than the sum of its parts. This and other issues will be the subject of this interdisciplinary course. Students will explore elements of the theory of thinking and problem solving. Students will look at currently resolved and unresolved problems that still haunt mankind.

Students are expected to think and problem solve using group debates, presentations and written submissions. Extensive problem solving and logic skills will be developed. No computer programming/engineering skills are necessary or will be used for this course.
