What makes DAS an Alternative School?

Parent involvement and Peacebuilding make DAS alternative. DAS was established as an alternative school in 1980, by parents who wanted to be actively involved in their children's education. New parents are asked to sign a contract, signifying agreement with the school's philosophy, code of behaviour and their willingness to contribute a minimum of 5 hours a month of volunteer time to the school. Who can attend DAS?

DAS is open to children across Toronto. It does not have a specific district.

 

Do I have to pay tuition?

DAS is a Toronto District School Board public school. There are no fees. Fundraising by parents helps support enrichment opportunities.

 

Where is DAS located?

DAS is in the St. Lawrence neighbourhood. It is on the South East corner of Lower Jarvis and The Esplanade (see About Us

 

Does DAS teach the Ontario Curriculum?

Yes. In mixed grade classes, teachers may teach "the big ideas" of the curriculum rather than specific grade topics.

 

Do DAS students write the EQAO tests in grades 3 and 6?

Yes, along with their peers across the province, DAS students participate in these assessments in the late Spring.

 

When can I register for DAS?

Prospective parents and children can our Open House and Orientation Session. These begin in early January/February. Please check our website in December to confirm the date and time. Acceptance of applicants will begin later in February. You will be asked to indicate your acceptance of the offer to attend by the end of March. There is also a waiting list for applicants that we are not able to admit. (see How to Join DAS)

 

Why do parents choose an alternative school?

Parents choose to send their children to DAS for a variety of reason. Many cherish the opportunity to participate in their child's education and the sense of community they find at DAS. Others value the sense of mutual respect among parents, staff and children and DAS's concern for the individuality and emotional development of their child. Many value the strong commitment to "Peacebuilding" and find it consistent with the values they teach at home. (see DAS Vision)

 

Does the school have before/after school care? 

Yes! Before and after school care is provided on-site by Brant Street Daycare. They also have a hot lunch program. (see Brant Street Daycare)

 

My child is late or going to be absent, how do I let the school know?

TDSB uses an automated system called "Safe Arrival". You can use it to let the office know or contact them directly. see TDSB Safe Arrival
