May

Dear Crerar Families,

Please take a moment to read about the 3-Part Virtual Literacy Series hosted by schools, Alexander Stirling, Highland Creek, Scarborough Village, and Woburn. Here is the flyer for more information: Literacy.

May is Jewish Heritage Month. The Province of Ontario recognizes the important contributions that Jewish Canadians have made to Ontario’s social, economic, political and cultural fabric. Jewish Heritage Month is an opportunity to remember, celebrate and educate future generations about the inspirational role that Jewish Canadians have played, and continue to play, in communities across Ontario. May is also recognized as Asian Heritage Month. Asian Canadians have significantly contributed to the settlement, growth and development of Canada, the diversity of the Asian community, and its present significance to this country. Asia is a land of great political, economic, social, ethnic, cultural and religious diversity. May is an opportunity to celebrate the culture, contributions and achievements of Asian Canadians.

We look forward to all our new JKs coming to school in the coming Fall. Just a friendly reminder that if you have a child born in 2020, to register for Junior Kindergarten as soon as you can. In addition, for all registered Junior Kindergarten families new to General Crerar PS, our Welcome to Kindergarten Event will be on Wednesday, May 15, 2024 at 2:30 p.m.

General Crerar's Talent Show will be taking place on May 9th starting at 5pm. This night will celebrate the many talents of some our students who have been preparing for the Talent Show. A special thank you to all the talented performers and Mr. Arnfield for organizing this event. The Talent Show will be a part of celebrating Respect Animals Week at Crerar, and will be only one of the many activities prepared by Mr. Arnfield and Ms. Ahier. We thank them and supporting staff members who took part in educating our students about the importance of respecting animals. Funds raised during the week and during the Talent Show night will go towards supporting the local animal shelter.

We also welcome all families to come and join our Eco Fair, which is happening on May 29th from 2-4 p.m. There will be several community agency vendors set up in the yard to support the learning around how we can all understand and take action to combat climate change. For our students and staff, this is an extension of the ongoing learning that has been happening all year at General Crerar as the Eco Team reminds us of our human connection and responsibility to care for the land as we acknowledge it and learn from Indigenous people.

There is much happening at General Crerar as student-athletes prepare for the annual Track and Field Meet happening on May 14 at Birchmount Stadium. Staff and students are also looking forward to Musician, Logan Staats, who we will be learning from on June 6. Following a school-wide performance, Logan will work with all of our students who identify as Indigenous, as well as students from Grades 6-8, on the power of musical creation, and identifying the medicinal qualities of creation to help heal and create purpose by writing lyrics. Thank you Parent Council for supporting this day as well by showing your appreciation to staff with a pizza lunch. Thank you also for supporting our graduating students with a contribution of $600 to offset the price of grad sweatshirts.

Thank you again to all families who contributed to our School Pantry. A reminder that General Crerar has a School Pantry open to all families. Please come by the office anytime during the school day. Our next School Council meeting is scheduled for May 8 at 6:00 p.m. in the school library. For those who are not able to join in-person, here is the link to join us virtually: Parent Council Meeting.

I cannot believe that we have only two more months together. Time flies when students are learning, having fun, and enjoying school.

Thank you for your partnership,

Ms. Lin
