Welcome to Ms. Norman and Ms. Rubie's Classroom!
Congratulations and Welcome! Miss Norman and Ms. Rubie are very excited to have your little one in our class. Our school theme this year is “The change begins with me”. This is a perfect theme for our class as we journey through our year as we will be learning so much about reading, writing, math, science, and the world around us. We look forward to helping your child learn and grow. The progress and growth that each child makes in their Kindergarten years never fails to amaze us!
The education of every child invokes a partnership between parents and teachers. There are many ways we will be able to work together this year to ensure your child receives the best education possible. Your support and involvement will help to make your child, and our class, journey to amazing places. If you have any questions, comments, or concerns, we encourage you to come in and speak to us directly.
As we are an eco-school, we will not be sending paper home other than permission forms. On our website (http://schools.tdsb.on.ca/hahalbert/), you will find important information about our class including our schedule and calendar. Please take the time to look it over carefully and check it regularly. We will be using the app Remind 101 to remind you about important dates, so please make sure the phone number we have for you is the most up to date one. Also, we will be using the app Sesame Snap which we will send you an e-mail with the link to, so please make sure we have a valid e-mail that you check on a regular basis. The really neat thing about Sesame Snap is that you can see what and how your child is doing all of the time!
Regular school attendance is essential to your child’s progress. Please make every effort to have your child here every day by 8:55 a.m. unless (s)he is ill or there is an emergency. The teachers will be bringing the children in from the Kindergarten yard, so please meet us there each morning while dropping off your young child. If your child is absent, please be sure to call the attendance line (416) 396-6300.
Our Superhero of the day will last for 2 days, you will find the name of the Superhero on the calendar. Each child may bring in one special object on their Superhero day to show the class. They will write a journal that day telling us why it is special to them and will draw a picture of it.
Birthdays are important to young children. We will recognize each child’s birthday in the classroom by singing the Happy Birthday song. However, we discourage any food in the classroom because of allergies, food restrictions, and periods of fasting for many of our children. If you would like to bring in a treat, a special pencil or fun eraser from the Dollar Store is a wonderful alternative. Thank you for your consideration and cooperation! If you wish to distribute invitations through school, you will need to give one to each child in the class.
We have 2 snack times a day as well as lunch time. Please send your child with at least 2 snacks a day as well as their lunch. When you are at the grocery store throughout the year, please keep snack time in mind and purchase healthy snack items to send in. Please be advised that as an eco-school our students are required to have litterless lunches so please pack their lunches and snacks in reusable containers, we will send home any garbage that they bring to school, including juice boxes. Please make sure all snacks are nut free. Also, send them with a reusable water bottle, we keep these accessible and in the class at all times.
Also, all students will receive SNAP Snack Program forms in the next few weeks.
Please send your child ready for the weather of the day. We send a lot of time outdoors and your child should be prepared to spend time outside each day. Also, please keep a change of clothes in your child’s backpack during the year. Place the clothes in a Ziploc bag (including underwear and socks) labeled with your child’s name in case of emergencies.
Please be sure to read with your child EVERY night! There is no better way to improve reading skills!! Letting them follow along with their finger is a great skill as well as sounding out simple words.
Safety is our primary concern. If your child is going home a different way than what has been filed, you MUST write a note stating the change. Please note the end of the day time change this year to 3:00pm.
Your child should get plenty of sleep each night. We have a very full day at school, and therefore Kindergarteners need at least 10 hours of sleep each night. Please set an early bed time and be consistent.
Please take a look at our schedule and make sure to bring shoes on gym days and bring back your library books each day 5.
We are looking forward to a wonderful year working with you and your child. Together, we will make this a very rewarding year!
Sincerely, Miss Norman & Ms.Rubie
