English and Literacy

Our English and Literacy program focuses on the development of essential literacy skills for our students. We help bridge literacy gaps so that students can find success in their daily lives, high school and beyond.

From Enhanced Pathways to tailored Locally Developed classes, our program is committed to dismantling anti-Black and anti-Indigenous racism through engaged reading, writing and speaking. We proudly offer the JETS program (JOY, EMPATHY, THINKING with the use of READING STRATEGIES) in all of our English classes. This is a student-centred approach to reading in which students will have the opportunity to choose what they read from diverse classroom libraries. The goal of this program is to foster a love of reading that will carry through the remainder of the course and beyond!

Additionally, we offer whole-school reading and writing diagnostics for our incoming Gr. 9 students. The results of these diagnostics help our teachers provide individualized classroom support. Our program also integrates a variety of helpful digital literacy tools such as Lexia, IXL, as well as a host of digital libraries to further support our students' literacy needs.

For students who require more intensive literacy support throughout the school year, we offer a 1:1 (or individualized) reading intervention program. This program is reflective of the Right to Read inquiry report and applies current strategies based on the science of reading.
