With only one week left in February, it feels as though the month has flown by! Next week, we look forward to our Black Heritage Month Assembly, that our BHA has been hard at work preparing, so that the school as a whole can come together to celebrate and learn!

Humberside Celebrates
Each February, people across Canada participate in Black History Month events and celebrations that honour the legacy and contributions of Black people in Canada and their communities. HCI's Black Heritage Association will be providing a spotlight for our HCI Celebrates on some of the many accomplishments from the Black community that, deserve to be honoured, throughout the month of February.
Astronautical engineer and astronomer George Robert Carruthers, a name well-known whose fame derives in part from the fact that he developed and built a compact and powerful ultraviolet electronographic telescope, which became the first (and still the only) astronomical instrument sent to the Moon. It was placed on the lunar surface on Apollo 16 in 1972, and it performed extremely well, leading to enhanced knowledge of the Earth’s outermost atmosphere and of the vast spaces between the stars and galaxies invisible to the eye.
The flight-backup of that astronomical instrument was first displayed at the Museum in the mid-1990s. It was first set out on the lunar surface of our Apollo Lander exhibit on the east end of the building next to the Lunar Module LM-2, and more recently in the Apollo to the Moon gallery, safely protected in a sealed vitrine.

A Window into the Classroom
Please have a look at some of the award winning crystals that were grown in one of our grade 11 science classes. Congratulations to A. Wellington, E. Daigle, R. Ragheb, D. Clapp, E. Fung and A. Leveque-Gherbaz, for their awards in Best Overall and Best Quality. They are now being sent to the National Crystal Growing Competition!

School Business
- Selection Support --> As we are nearing the end or our course selection timeline, the Humberside Guidance Department has created a video to support common questions and concerns about planning out your HCI pathway to graduation. We invite you to view our HCI Selection Video to learn more. As always, please reach out to your alpha guidance counsellor for any follow up questions.

School Council
The next HCI Parent Council meeting --> Tuesday, February 24 at 6:30pm in the school library (see the agenda here).
Come out to hear updates from Principal Pearson and student leaders. We will also be talking about plans for a spring clean-up to show our tennis court area some love and about how to spend the money we raised in November. We are pleased to report that our updated fundraising total is $11,448 and we have some great proposals to consider for PhysEd equipment, instruments, technology and more.
"Just Ask Jessica" --> Do you have a question for Principal Pearson? Submit it to us by email at humberside.sac@gmail.com. We will group and summarize relevant questions for Ms. Pearson before our next meeting. You can attend the meeting to hear the answers, or read them afterward in our meeting minutes. All questions will be kept anonymous. This feature is for general topics only, not for questions about individual students or teachers.
Happy Friday,
Jessica Pearson
