Library Learning Commons

Library Learning Commons

K.C.I.'s Library Learning Commons is a hub of activity -- a place to learn, read, play and belong! It's a bright, spacious, cheerful, and safe space.

Daily, the library learning commons is full of students learning, reading, playing and getting to know one another! We are open before school, at lunch and after school

During class time, they learn the importance of developing digital literacy skills (e.g. judging the credibility of a source, learning a new technological tool) and documenting one's work with citations. The teacher-librarians work with students and teachers to enhance their inquiry, media and research skills, improve their literacy and numeracy skills, and foster the joy of reading.

How We Can Help?

  • Access to a large collection of resource (non-fiction) books and a large collection of fiction books to read for pleasure or a class project. This includes many, many, many graphic novels, comics, manga & anime.
  • Provide opportunities to use technology including wireless internet, networked computers, headphones & chrome books.
  • Distribute and facilitate the repairs to the 1:1 Chromebooks
  • Reset passwords and help diagnosis technological issues.
  • Create lessons and handouts related to note-taking, paraphrasing, evaluating sources, avoiding plagiarism, and citing sources.
  • Arrange a variety of spaces within the library learning commons for quiet study, individual or group work, reading or socializing with peers.
  • Get extra help with tutoring at lunch

At lunch, students are engaged in serious chess matches as well as fun games of Monopoly and Uno. They also participate in scavenger hunt contests, help each other with class work and sign out books. Lately, students have been drawn to the new community puzzle; so far the students have completed four puzzles this semester!

Student Leadership Building & Volunteer Opportunities:

  • Library Helpers: student volunteer librarians help shelve or put away books, sign books in and out as well as create displays for the space.
