Workshops with John G Althouse Middle School

Student colouring a mask.

Grade 9 - 12 student leaders in the Visual arts had the opportunity to guide students from John G. through mask making hosted in our art room. Our students were incredibly engaging, adding tips and advice for our future MCI students as they guided them in creating interesting marks and compositions.

Special thanks to our visual arts students for their time and energy:

Kajal Patel, Aknan Ali, Connie Kim, Nora TUnggadevi, Rose Mahmood, Maria Jagdeo, Chloe Ciolli, Mahee Desai, Jasdeep Banvait and Noor Syed.

Masks

Completed Masks

Based on the theme of ‘A night at the museum,’ we reflected on art objects that can be found in museums all over the world.

Masks are objects that cover the face for variety of reasons. They are used for protection, disguise, entertainment or ritual practices and are made from various materials, depending of use. Earliest use of masks was for rituals and ceremonies, and the oldest found mask is from 7000 BC.

Masks from all over the globe are equally represented in museum spaces which is why we have chosen to create masks for the theme ‘Night at the Museum.’ We drew our inspiration from across the globe, from horror movies, video games, theatre and nature.

Collage

Completed Collages

We chose to make collages and make collage available at our collage station because it is accessible to all people regardless of existing ability or training in the arts.

Throughout the 20th century, creatives across many movements, mediums, and styles began to explore the practice of collage art. The inventive and innovative approach to art attracted artists due to its one-of-a-kind aesthetic and unique, pieced-together process.

Thank you to all our volunteers

Thank you to all our student volunteers who took time out of their own schedule to help set up for our special evening. Special thanks to those who stayed to greet visitors and to encourage our guests to create masks and collages!
