Good Afternoon Northern Families,

A more condensed bulletin this week! We hope students were able to view the Amazing Race today (put on by our United Way Committee). There were also a number of activities run for Youth Mental Health Week- thank you to all staff and students who took part.

Some time sensitive deadlines for students to remember:

Grade 9's who have not submitted a photo- Yearbook wants your photo! Please submit the Grade 9 Portrait form by May 7 at the latest.

If a picture is not submitted we will use a standard fill in icon.

Grade 12, Yearbook quotes and baby photos- This year in lieu of grad photos yearbook would like your baby photos. Please submit the Grade 12 yearbook quotes and baby photo form by May 7 at the latest.

OBA/ OJEN Mock Trial competition:

The NSS “Law Mowers'' mock trial team advanced to the finals, after beating out UTS in the semis. Although we ended up placing 2nd, special mention was given by the judges regarding our team’s advocacy and acting skills! It was noted that each student on our team could have a promising career in the legal profession if they choose such a path. Their hard work and dedication was evident and we are all extremely proud of their achievements. Go Law Mowers!

 

Northern Debate Team:

Last weekend, Northern Debate teams placed 5th and 8th out of 20 teams in the OSDU (Ontario Student Debate Union) Senior debate and a junior debate team placed 85th out of 186 teams in the Appleby Novice Debate tournament. Congratulations to Dunan Volk, Catherine Gadalova, Kennedy Hedgecock, Finesse Lunsky, Caroline Knoke and Joanna Kolovos for all the hard work last weekend.

 

United Way:

United Way applications for the 2021-2022 committee are now out! Northern’s United Way committee is a student-based association that runs a fundraising campaign throughout the year to support the United Way of Greater Toronto. To learn more about the committee check out @nssunitedway on Instagram.

Music News:

Speaker Series

Ever wished you could gain valuable insight on what it's like to pursue music or be in the music industry? Check out NSS Music's 2021 Speaker Series! All Northern students are invited to attend, learn and ask questions. Here are our next speakers:

2. Poster On Tuesday, June 8th at 4:00 pm, listen to violist, violinist and broadcaster Kathleen Kajioka share her experiences in the music industry. Sign up at bit.ly/kajioka. Since 2007, Ms. Kajioka has been a radio host for "The New Classical 96.3FM," hosting the programs "A Little Night Music" Sunday Night at the TSO" and "Dinner Classics." She is considered a "musical multi-linguist" having played the violin and viola worldwide, including with the Baroque chamber group, Ensemble Masques. She also teaches music history at the Glenn Gould School of Music.

NSSPALS, Northern’s association for supporting newcomer students and celebrating cultural diversity, will be hosting a virtual baking event on Thursday, May 13th @ 3:30PM!

Everyone is welcome to attend!

We will be following up our first exciting recipe tutorial on Turkish yogurt by making a Yorkshire Pudding family recipe hosted by one of our members.

GAC (Gifted Advisory Committee) virtual meeting - Thursday, May 13 at 7:30 p.m.
All parents of gifted students are invited and very welcome to participate in our last scheduled meeting of this school year, this Thursday, May 13 at 7:30 p.m. Join us to connect with other parents, hear the inside scoop on feedback about the gifted program, get a sneak peek at some plans for next year, and especially to be sociable with other parents from the comfort of your favourite couch and bunny slippers!

The Foundation is pleased to offer many Scholarships and Awards to Northern graduates. We are grateful to former teachers, parents and alumni who fund these awards.

Student Success

Peer tutoring is now available for quad 4. Please fill in the Peer Tutor Registration Form. You must complete the form using your TDSB account.

Students will be notified of their tutor by email over the next couple of weeks.

  1. Important Update: All TDSB Summer Programs to be Remote (Online)

eLearning Summer School: online – FLEXIBLE school times

Con Ed Summer School – Fully Remote – Full Credit

Remote Credit Recovery - For TDSB Students ONLY:

  • Remote Summer Credit Recovery courses are open to current TDSB high school students who have taken the course in the past two years but have not earned the credit.
  • All classes are remote. There are no in-person classes available.
  • Regular attendance in the remote environment is a requirement.
  • Students may enroll in one course either in the AM or PM, or in two courses, one in the AM and one in the PM.
  • students will be at home learning live (synchronously) with their
    teacher daily from 9:00 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. for our AM session and from 12:30
    p.m.- 3:15 p.m. for our PM session.
  • Students participating in both an AM and PM course will have lunch daily from 11:45 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Math Support for Grades 9 and 10:

Northern’s Math Department is pleased to announce the beginning of an after-school virtual Numeracy Program to support grade 9 and 10 math learners! Students will work with members of the NSS Math department to build and strengthen mathematical reasoning and comprehension as well as practice and apply key mathematical processes and concepts required throughout the Grade 9 and 10 math curricula.

The Numeracy Program schedule is as follows:

- Grade 9: Tuesdays (3:30 – 4:30)

- Grade 10: Thursdays (3:30 – 4:30)

All grade 9 and 10 students are welcome and do not have to currently be taking math to register. Interested in registering? The registration form can be found on the Numeracy Program Google Classroom using the class code xwggamt

2) A Word from WellNSS - visit here for a list of resources on self-care for you and your student. The webpage also has links to articles and videos on resilience, gratitude, hope, and coping, as well as lists of mental health supports available for parents and students.

 

Mental Health Counselling Support at Northern Secondary;

  1. Community Services provides a registered psychotherapist , Dale Callender, on-site, full time at Northern, to work in partnership with the existing school support services. The service uses an early intervention model and supports students by allowing them easy and immediate access to mental health and counselling services provided through the In-School service. Dale Callender works in collaboration with TDSB staff in order to customize a program to enhance the mental health services and supports that are available to students on-site at the school. This program allows Northern priority access to Lumenus’ mental health service program, and offers students a seamless referral process to other community programs as dictated by their individual needs. Dale Callender is available currently via virtual sessions and/or phone calls to provide psychotherapy counselling support to students, parents/caregivers.
