Conversation Starters: (follow-up and a new starter)

Follow Up: What makes you “who you are”? You may have done this activity before….what makes up your identity? Talk it over with whoever you live with. There’s a big laundry list here, and I will never get everything: gender, race, religion, cultural background, socio-economic background, friends, family, experiences and so on. What and whom has shaped who you are today?

Some thoughts: the exercise from last week is essentially a dive into who you are. It is hard to understand your position in the world without first knowing yourself. There are no right or wrong answers here- but honesty is important to really get to know yourself. Once we know where we are we can begin to understand how parts of our identity can make things “easier” or more difficult. You may recall an earlier conversation starter about dealing with negative interactions travelling to school- this is one example of how our identity impacts our lived experience. Until we think about it, it is simply “normal” – we think everyone thinks the same and we fail to relate to the experiences of others.

This Week’s Conversation Starter: Reflect back to your conversation from last week. What parts of your identity make things “easier” at home, school, work, in society? What parts of your identity make things “harder” or “more challenging” at home, school, work, in society?

BlackNSS:

BlackNSS is running a survey and wants your input. Check out the survey HERE. We appreciate your input!

Mock Trial Team:

"Congratulations to the Northern Law Society Competitive Mock Trial team for competing against other schools in the hallowed halls of the Ontario Provincial Court House on Wednesday night. Months of hard work culminated in these preliminary rounds of the OJEN Regional Mock Trials. They represented the Defense Counsel in the first trial, and the Crown in the second, building compelling arguments while attempting to discredit those of the opposing teams. Go Northern Law Mowers!"

United Way Week

Help us support people living in poverty during United Way Week! Running from May 16th to 20th we will be running a variety of events at school in support of the United Way of Greater Toronto. Come watch teachers face off in sports games during Faculty Follies, cheer on clubs and associations as they compete in fun challenges during the Great Race, or pick up a treat and an information pamphlet at one of our snack booths!

N.S.S. Cooperative Education Partners Wanted

Cooperative Education at Northern is made possible each year through the continuing support of placement supervisors, local businesses and employers. Strong community partnerships are essential in providing our students with the rich, relevant work experiences a good placement can provide.

As a Cooperative Education Partner, you can play a valuable role in helping a Northern student develop skills, knowledge and work habits they will remember and refer to throughout their lives. As well, these partnerships are mutually beneficial as our students will bring new ideas, fresh perspectives, enthusiasm, and additional support to your workplace.

We have a number of Northern students looking for Co-op placements in a variety of fields starting in mid-September, 2022/23. If you are interested in becoming a placement supervisor for one of our students or know of a local business opportunity, please email john.giles@tdsb.on.ca or linda.duffy@tdsb.on.ca to learn about how you can become a Northern Cooperative Education Partner.

Lumenus Community Services:
Lumenus Community Services provides a registered psychotherapist , Dale Callender, on-site, full time at Northern, to work in partnership with the existing school support services. The service uses an early intervention model and supports students by allowing them easy and immediate access to mental health and counselling services provided through the In-School service. Dale Callender works in collaboration with TDSB staff in order to customize supports to enhance the mental health services that they may need and wish to access. This program allows Northern priority access to Lumenus’ mental health service program, and offers students a seamless referral process to other community programs as dictated by their individual needs.
If anyone would like to consult and /or set up a time to talk with Dale, you can contact him via his email at dalecallender@lumenus.ca.
