SUNNY VIEW SCHOOL COUNCIL – September 28, 2011

Present – Michele Hopper Julie Suh
Ijeoma Ross Dale Zimmerman
Joanne Downing Laura Williams
Susan-Jane Bynoe Holly Yip

Welcome and Introductions
Introductions were made and Michele welcomed everyone.

Principal’s Report
Back healthcare has been demolished and re-building has begun. There will be 3 cubicles with change tables and 1 regular wheelchair washroom.

Front healthcare – need to replace shower that was taken out many years ago. Will add new stalls in current office area. This will probably be done next summer when the school is empty.

There has been an ongoing problem with the roof and hopefully they will be addressed soon.

Council Positions

Positions will be decided on at the October meeting, and we will take a vote at that time.
Michele asked to be emailed as to what position you are willing to take on.
Michele said she would like someone to take on social issues – contacting trustees, etc.
We would also like someone to take on fundraising.

Finances – Budget

Blythwood will be doing their concert here again and will do a gift card donation again. Blythwood suggested that Dale goes to their fall fair with a presentation table to get people interested in donating to the toy doctor programme, probably with home depot gift cards.
Holly suggested a monthly mention of the toy doctor programme in the newsletter to solicit donations from SV parents.
Ijeoma brought in some information on a fundraiser selling peanut free cookie dough.

Budget priority list
We need feedback from staff and to what is needed in the school. Technology is always big.
The school would like 6 ipads that could be signed out and used with the whole class. These would be around $600 each.
We still have not received the proceeds from the run, roll and wheel event with Dani.
We need receipts from summer camp and would like a bit more info from the summer camp principals. Council is concerned with the # of summer camp participants that come from other schools. Feel we should not be funding them. Would also like a budget from summer camp for next summer to be approved or not. We should be looking at the amount we give to camp each year. It is one of our largest expenses.

Other Business
Susan-Jane will open an email account for council and post it on the website and in the newsletter. This will allow parents to contact us and someone will monitor this account regularly.

Joanne mentioned that it would be a good idea as council members take on jobs outlined in the meetings that a “task list” be added to the minutes to remind members of what they committed themselves to do.

Next meeting

Meetings will be held on the 3rd Wednesday of every month. Where exceptions are made, they will be posted in the minutes.
Next meeting will be October 19, from 12:00 – 1:30.
