On May 5, KCI Remembers

Red Dress Day 5

On May 5th, we join schools across the Toronto District School Board and communities across Turtle Island in recognizing Red Dress Day – the National Day of Awareness for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, and Two-Spirit People.

Red Dress Day is a time to reflect, remember, and raise awareness about the ongoing violence that disproportionately affects Indigenous communities. The red dress has become a symbol of those lives lost, first made visible through the powerful art of Métis artist Jaime Black in the REDress Project.

This year, we especially honour the lives of Morgan Harris, Marcedes Myran, Rebecca Contois, and Buffalo Woman — four Indigenous women from Manitoba whose tragic stories remind us of the urgent need for justice and change.

Flags are lowered today at TDSB sites to mark this important day. We encourage everyone to take time to learn, reflect, and commit to action, as we continue the journey toward truth and reconciliation.
