Project of the Heart
This winter, Charlottetown Junior Public School participated in “Project of the Heart”, a beautiful tribute to honour the thousands of lives of Indigenous children who suffered and died as a result of the residential school experience.
Each student and staff member at Charlottetown were given two small, wooden tiles to decorate and paint, using their own chosen imagery to portray and symbolize our awareness, understanding, and respect for the victims of residential schools and surviving Indigenous family members.
Over 700 tiles now make up the beautiful artwork that is now displayed in our school. It is a powerful and daily reminder to never forget the children who lost their lives due to the effects of the residential school system in Canada.
This project is part of our mission to educate and engage both students and staff in a deeper exploration and understanding of Indigenous culture, traditions and the history of residential schools. It is our goal to encourage ownership of past injustice, as well as, the continued oppression of our Indigenous communities.
This project is just a small gesture of our continued reconciliation and it is our promise as educators to continue teaching the true history of what Indigenous families went through. To learn more about the Project of the Heart, please visit:
