Where will my child sleep?
There are two separate dorm wings on opposite sides of the building. Students will live 2 - 5 in a room, each room containing two bunk beds. There is a separate teacher room located in each wing. Click here to see pictures of our facility.
What are the bathroom facilities? Where will my child shower?
Each dorm wing has separate washrooms with stalls and private showers. Additionally, there are 2 all gender bathrooms on site. Students will be given an opportunity to shower each evening. Students are asked to keep the dorms clean and help with chores in the morning to keep our centre clean for future visitors.
Can my child's dietary need be accommodated?
The kitchen can provide meals to suit the needs of all students pertaining to religious, medical, or health reasons (e.g. allergy, religious restriction). Please ensure that your medical and dietary forms are complete and up to date in the TDSB Excursion Management Application (EMA). Feel free to reach out should you have any questions related to our meals. Click here for more information about the dining hall, menu, and accommodations.
Will my child be safe at the Etobicoke Outdoor Education Centre?
All staff are Toronto District School Board employees. The staff are trained in first aid and emergency procedures. Your child will be under direct supervision during program time by the E.O.E.C. staff and after hours by their homeroom teacher. The facility is locked at night and has full fire alarm protection. In the event of an emergency, you will be notified.
Do I need to worry about bugs in the dorms (e.g. bed bugs)
The EOEC is under contract with Orkin Canada Pest Control. This includes twice monthly checks for any problematic bugs (mainly bed bugs) using both pest traps as well as a highly trained sniffer dog by the name of Chase. We take every precaution to prevent bed bugs, but also ask that families wash AND dry linens and clothing on high heat before and after their to their visit to ensure we remain bug free.
Is it a vacation?
While we hope that you do have fun during your stay with us, the Etobicoke Outdoor Education Centre is operated by the Toronto District School Board. We like to say that the students are "just trading their school for ours this week". Each day students will be exposed to programs with direct curriculum links back to the classroom. All rules regarding behaviour, expectations, and policies of the Toronto District School Board are followed at the centre (e.g. device free).
