We would like to welcome you and your child to Kindergarten at Heather Heights Public School.  We look forward to teaching your child and providing meaningful experiences to develop a lifelong love for learning.  This website is to help explain how things run in Room 102 and what one should expect this year.  Best wishes, as we embark on this learning journey together.

Classroom Expectations

Attendance and Lateness

A successful school experience is the responsibility of the child, the parent, and the school. Your child’s progress, both academically and socially, is influenced to a great extent by daily participation. Regular attendance without tardiness is the key.  The outdoor classroom door will be closed after the bell rings.  If you are late, please sign in at the office to get a late slip and then bring your child to class.

Birthdays and Snacks

Due to severe allergies, peanut butter and peanut/nut products are not allowed in the school for your child’s snack or lunch.  Ensure that your snacks are NUT FREE !
Birthdays are special times and we acknowledge them in the classroom.  This year at Heather Heights, in honour of your child’s birthday, your child can give a book to their class.  You can write your child’s name in the front cover, the current date, and any other birthday sentiments you and your child want to include.  Have fun wrapping the book so that the birthday student can open it with their classmates and enjoy reading it together. We ask you to honour this method of birthday celebrating and to not send in any treats.  This way we avoid allergy and food restrictions that many students have.  Thank you and have fun selecting a special book with your child!

Mailbag

There will be important notices and forms for your attention throughout the school year.  To keep these items safe, each child will be given a large plastic bag labelled with your child’s name.  This bag must be carried back and forth with your child each and every day.  Weekly homework will also be kept in this bag. You may also place any notes, forms, and money for trips and fundraisers in this bag.

'Learning To Play....
Playing To Learn'

“Young children actively explore their environment and the world around them through a process of learning-based play – for example, manipulating objects, acting out roles, and experimenting with various materials. Play is a vehicle for learning. It provides opportunities for learning in a context in which children are at their most receptive. Play and work are not distinct categories for young children, and learning and doing are also inextricably linked for them. It has long been acknowledged that there is a strong link between play and learning for young children, especially in the areas of problem solving, language acquisition literacy, numeracy, and social skills. Play, therefore, has a legitimate and important role in Kindergarten and can be used to further children’s learning in all areas of the Kindergarten Program”.
