In Full Effect: OPAL!
The Outdoor Play and Learning Program at Humewood is back!
If you had a chance to come by the field area during regular school hours, you may have noticed students building forts, standing and balancing on large wood spools, swinging from tire swings, and engaging in pool-noodle sword play. These are just some of OPAL loose parts made available to students each and everyday. Loose parts are an invitation to play, which naturally provokes students to create, explore, and construct anything they can imagine.
Teachers and staff supervise play and encourage students to always consider the following when playing with others:
- Is it safe for everyone?
- Is it fun for everyone?
- Is everyone that wants to play included?
Some of Humewood’s Grade 5 to 7 students wanted to share their knowledge and experience with OPAL with our younger students, and ones new to the Humewood community. With Mme. Rutherford’s guidance and support, they collaborated to create an OPAL PSA (public service announcement) that explains OPAL rules and provides keystone conflict resolution strategies for common playground conflicts.
Kindergarten registration for the 2022 - 2023 school year is open!
In the spirit of the season Humewood Community School is asking for your help to create: Holiday Gift Card Give Back Gifts for families in need in Toronto. Due to the ongoing pandemic, now more families than ever could use some help this holiday season.
In collaboration with the TDSB’s Social Work team and Toronto Foundation for Student Success (TFSS), we will be giving 9 families in need a collection of gift cards to help with their holiday shopping and make this season a little brighter for them.
Last year we raise $7,560.00 and were able to provide each family with $840 worth of gift cards to purchase their own food and gifts for the holidays and beyond.
Humewood CS has been assigned 9 families this year.
Each grade (K to Grade 8) will be receiving a profile of a family in need and learning about their story to make more of a connection to them.
Each class will also create a holiday greeting card to go along with the gift card collection that each family will receive.
As in previous year we are partnering with the Toronto Foundation for Student Success (TFSS).
If you do not want a tax receipt you are still able to donate new gift cards with the receipt attached to your young person’s teacher.
Gift cards from Loblaws, Dollarama and Walmart are most appreciated.
THANK YOU FOR YOUR GENEROSITY!
Please submit your donations are submitted to TFSS or to Humewood by Thursday, December 9th.
