Financial Fitness Challenge

The IDC4U – Financial Securities class participated in the Canadian Securities Administrators (CSA) Financial Fitness Challenge.  The on-line contest, for students 15-21 years of age, tests students’ knowledge of budgeting, saving and investing.  The resource also helps students learn the importance of practicing good financial habits in order to achieve strong financial health today and for the future.  The students have an opportunity to win a scholarship.

Saving & Investment Challenge

The BBI2O – Introduction to Business class participated in the Investor Education Fund Saving & Investment Challenge.  The challenge, for students enrolled in grade 9 or 10 in an Ontario high school, teaches students about saving and investing money in various financial vehicles.  Students research and compare account offerings at various financial institutions, record and track the growth potential of saving and investment options and choose the option that best meets their needs.  The students have an opportunity to win cash prizes.

Financial Securities Portfolio Competition

The IDC4U – Financial Securities class participated in the Investor Education Fund Financial Securities Portfolio Competition.  The competition, open to all Ontario high school students, has students designing a securities portfolio based on a client profile.  Students track the stock and bond performances for a period of time and complete a detailed analysis at the end.  The students have an opportunity to win cash prizes.

Sprott Business Competition

The BBB4M – International Business and BOH4M – Business Leadership classes participated in the Carlton University Sprott School of Business Sprott Business Competition.  The competition, open to high school students, allows students to run their own virtual business.  Student teams act as senior executives making management decisions for a fictional firm in a fictional industry.  The object is to make the most money by making the right business decisions.  The students have an opportunity to win gifts and awards.

Stock Market Game

The L’Amoreaux Investment Club participated in the Nipissing University School of Business and Economics Stock Market Game.  The game, featuring stock market simulation software used at Harvard, Stanford, McGill and the London School of Economics, provides an excellent experience for the students to learn about capital markets.  The students have an opportunity to win tuition credits.

OBEA Accounting Contest

The OBEA Accounting contest is a province-wide contest sponsored by the CGA and CMA organizations.  The contest is offered at two levels:  Grade 11 and Grade 12.  The grade 11 contest is open to the top students in each grade 11 accounting class.  The grade 12 contest is open to the top students in each grade 12 accounting class.  Students have one and a half hours to complete 100 multiple-choice online questions as well as a written tie breaking question.  The contest date is usually set for the end of May.  Students will receive a provincial ranking.

COIN Accounting Contest

The Institute of Chartered Accountants of Ontario sponsor the COIN Contest.  Students who are a member of the Associate Student Program with the ICAO can compete in this contest.  All SHSM students are enrolled as Associate Student Members as part of their program.  This contest consists of 75 senior-level multiple choice questions prepared by Chartered Accountants.  This contest usually runs mid May.  Students who compete receive a Certificate of Achievement and the top 20 COIN winners will get an Honour Roll Luncheon plus the following:  1st Place--$1,500; 2nd Place--$1,000, 3rd Place--$500, Top 20--$100.

OBEA Programming Contest

Students can compete in this province-wide programming contest using any readily available programming language.  The OBEA Contest Booklet states that submissions can be in any one of the following categories:  Sciences, Mathematics, Art/Graphics, Simulation Games, Operating Systems Utilities, and Business Applications.  The source code as well as an executable file should be submitted.  Documentation is required both internally and externally and usually separates first, second, and third place winners in each category.  This contest usually runs in mid May.
