Daily Bread Food Bank

Room 15’s Adventure by Varisara Thanomphan

On Tuesday September 25th, room 15 and room 12 went on a field trip to the Food Bank. We went there because we wanted to fight hunger by volunteering. We volunteered by sorting huge stacks of cereal boxes. We had a host named Lauren, she was amazing. She assigned some people to check the best before date, and that was the first group’s responsibility, then group two had to put the cereal boxes in larger boxes and group three had to fold the boxes, folding the boxes must have been hard for them.

After we finished sorting the huge stacks of cereal boxes and eating lunch, Lauren gave us a tour around the Food Bank. We asked her lots of questions while we went on the tour with her. She took us to many places. First she took us to where the Food Bank had one giant freezer, the size of Ogden’s gym and two fridges. Lauren said they had to throw out lots of frozen pizzas and they were really sad about it. We got to go into the freezer, it was really cool but before we went in, there was a rope in front of the freezer. Someone was lucky to pull that rope and it was Jason “It was so cool to see the rope open the freezer,” said Yi Chen. Later we went to a room next door, it had about 6 trucks that cost $250,000 each, that was a lot of money they had to spend.

Then we went to the Kitchen, “It smelled really good in the Kitchen,” Linda said. We went in and we saw big pots, the pots were there for sauces and soups to be made. The Food Bank cooks 4,500 meals a week that must mean lots of work for them. After that we walked by an indoor Supermarket for people who are in need of food. You don’t have to pay for anything. The Food Bank does not only have food in the Food Bank but they also have things for your family and your pets.

Lauren told us what 211 is and it is for people in need of food so the Food Bank delivers it to them with these big trucks. She really gave us an amazing tour but not only that, everyone was really happy for what they did and how they all worked together to help fight hunger.

The Food Bank employees work 100,000 hours a year. Lauren actually thinks the Food Bank should shut down because she thinks everyone should be able to buy their own food and things for their family and not make other people do it for them.

It was an amazing day and everybody should be happy for what they did “It was so fun to be there,” said Wendy. Hope to go there again.
