BACK TO BASICS CODE OF CONDUCT


At Portage Trail Community Middle School our goal is to provide our students with challenging, innovative academic programs based on the Ontario Curriculum and designed to meet our students’ learning needs. To realize this goal and to have our students reach their maximum learning potential, we work together as a team to create a safe and welcoming learning environment. The Portage Trail Community Middle School Back To Basics Code of Conduct was designed by our staff to teach our students the behavioural skills, concepts and knowledge necessary to become respectful, responsible and self disciplined learners.

 

Entry and Exit Procedures:

 

  • lines for each Grade 6, 7, and 8 at designated doors.
  • students line up quietly and enter school in a quiet, orderly fashion
  • remove hats, dispose of gum, garbage in garbage bins before entering school
  • keep to right side of stairs, halls when going to lockers, moving from class to class
  • once dismissed students will leave school yard to go home. There is no re-entry into building
  • teachers who keep a class in past regular class time will escort and supervise the class at their lockers and out of the building
  • front doors will be used only by students who are bussed, late or accompanied by a parent or teacher.

 

 

Washroom and Drinks


Students

 

  • will ask at an appropriate time in an appropriate way
  • will have an agenda that the teacher signs indicating reason and time
  • will have teacher fill in Leaving Log
  • will have a green student Hall Pass
  • will not use washrooms or go to water fountain during Period 1 and Period 4

Students are: 

 

 

  • taught how to enter and exit school, move from class to class in an appropriate manner

Teachers will:
 

  • teach students how to enter and exit school
  • teach and practice with students appropriate school behaviour when in the school

 

Dress Code: Uniforms


All Portage Trail Community Middle School students WILL wear the designated uniform clothing. This uniform dress Code has been requested and endorsed by the Parent Council. The uniform incorporates the school colours and helps staff and students to quickly identify any intruders in the school.

 

NON COMPLIANCE WITH DRESS CODE:

Student will be sent to office with one of the following consequences:

  • receive "loaner" clothing item which needs to be returned at end of day.
  • make a phone call home
  • sent home

Students will demonstrate the following behaviour when in the school:

 

Hallways

  • always walk on right hand side in single file
  • keep your hands, feet and possessions to yourself
  • use an indoor voice
  • always have a hall pass if out of class during instructional time

 

 

Lockers

  • every student has a locker
  • no sharing of lockers
  • locker combinations are to be kept confidential (No key or laser locks are permitted)
  • post student timetable and what I need list in my locker

Teachers will:

  • demonstrate proper locker organization
  • discuss with students what items will be needed for each subject
  • provide every student with a time table for them to copy.

 

 

 

Locker Visit Times: 

  • 8:40 after morning entry
  • 11:19 at lunch dismissal
  • 12:10 at afternoon entry
  • 2:52 at end of day dismissal

 

Extracurricular Activities and Extra Help:


All students are encouraged to join extra curricular activities and seek help with school work after school from their teachers.

 

  • students participating in after school activities will first go to their lockers and get all their possessions required for dismissal.
  • students involved in sports teams will wait in the hallway by the courtyard or go to the gym to meet their teacher/coaches.
  • students getting Extra Help before school or at lunch will have an Extra Help Hall Pass signed by their teacher.
  • teachers will meet these students at the Courtyard doors

Daily Preparation and Organizational Strategies:

 

 

 

  • pack your school bag in the evening
  • make sure uniform is clean and ready to wear
  • use agenda to write down homework, due dates for tests, projects and field trips.
  • check agenda each morning to get organized for the day.

 

 

 

Lunchtime

At Lunchtime Students at Portage Middle School:

All Students stay at school for the entire lunch period where they are supervised by lunch supervisors:

  • eat their lunch ( brought from home) in the lunch room
  • remain sitting while eating lunch
  • dispose of garbage and recycling in containers provided
  • go outside for outdoor activity in the school yard after eating lunch
  • students MUST stay on school property for the whole lunch period
  • will listen to and respect lunch supervisors
