Our K–8 Music Program is a dynamic, hands-on learning environment designed to build musical literacy, performance skills, and a lifelong love for creative expression.
- Primary Choir: Singing is at the heart of our early music education. All primary students participate in choir, learning healthy vocal posture, pitch matching, tone production, and ensemble singing. The repertoire includes traditional folk songs, multicultural music, and contemporary children's literature.
- Orff Schulwerk Instruments: Using xylophones, metallophones, glockenspiels, and unpitched percussion, students explore melodic and rhythmic concepts hands-on. Children learn to read basic notation, play ostinatos, improvise melodies, and accompany their vocal performances through interactive ensemble play.
- Ukulele Unit: Serving as a bridge between melodic percussion and complex fretted instruments, the ukulele introduces basic chord structures, strumming patterns, fingerpicking, and tab reading. Students quickly learn to accompany their own singing with popular and traditional tunes.
- World Drumming: Rooted in West African, Caribbean, Latin American, Korean and Hindustanit Indian percussion. Our world drumming curriculum emphasizes rhythm, polyrhythms, and call-and-response techniques. Students learn both traditional rhythmic patterns and the cultural history behind the instruments, developing timing and collective listening skills.
- Instrumental Band: Students select woodwind, brass, or percussion instruments, moving into formal ensemble playing. The band program develops site-reading proficiency, tone quality, dynamic control, and balance within an ensemble. Students rehearse diverse repertoire ranging from classical works to modern concert band literature, performing in school concerts and regional music festivals.
- Music Technology & Composition: Technology is integrated throughout the school curriculum to expand students' creative toolkits. Using Digital Audio Workstations (DAWs) such as Earsketch, Soundtrap and BandLab interactive notation software, and MIDI keyboards, students compose original tracks, record live instrumentation, edit audio, and explore electronic music production.
