In 1845 a log schoolhouse was built on the site. 50 students were enrolled. A Brick schoolhouse was constructed in 1874 and the number of students enrolled jumped to 60.
In 1966 Smithfirld Senior Public School was opened by the Etobicoke Board of Education to serve 250 students. Over time additions have included; 2 new wings, a resource center and a lunchroom.
In 1981 the school was renamed Smithfield Middle School. Current enrollement is 835, serving students in Grades 6-8. Currently the school operates with 10 portables.
