Grade 9 Courses

Course Title: English as a Second Language

Course Code: ESLAO/ESLBO

This course extends students’ listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills in English for everyday and academic purposes. Students will participate in conversations in structured situations on a variety of familiar and new topics; read a variety of texts designed or adapted for English language learners; expand their knowledge of English grammatical structures and sentence patterns; and link English sentences to compose paragraphs. The course also supports students’ continuing adaptation to the Ontario school system by expanding their knowledge of diversity in their new province and country. 

Prerequisite: None for ESLAO, ESLAO or its equivalent must be taken before ESLBO

Grade 10 Courses

Course Title: English as a Second Language

Course Code: ESLBO/ESLCO

Description: This course is designed to improve students’ accuracy in using English in classroom situations, for personal and career planning, and to understand the changing world around them. Students study and interpret a range of texts and produce a variety of forms of writing. Activities help students to develop their oral presentation skills and acquire study skills (including note-taking and summarizing skills) that will enhance their ability to learn in all subjects. 

Prerequisite: ESLAO or its equivalent must be taken before ESLBO, ESLBO or its equivalent must be taken before ESLCO

Course Title: Learning Strategies for ESL Students Only

Course Code: GLS1O

Description: This course focuses on learning strategies to help students become better,more independent learners. Students will learn how to develop and apply literacy and numeracy skills, personal-management skills and interpersonal and teamwork skills to improve their learning and achievement in school, the workplace, and the community. The course helps students build confidence and motivation to pursue opportunities for success in secondary school and beyond.

Grade 11 Courses

Course Title: English as a Second Language

Course Code: ESLCO/ESLDO

Description: This course further extends students’ skills in listening, speaking, reading, and writing in English for a variety of everyday and academic purposes. Students will make short classroom oral presentations; read a variety of adapted and original texts in English; and write using a variety of text forms. As well, students will expand their academic vocabulary and their study skills to facilitate their transition to the mainstream school program. This course also introduces students to the rights and responsibilities inherent in Canadian citizenship, and to a variety of current Canadian issues. 

Prerequisite: ESLBO or its equivalent must be taken before ESLCO, ESLCO or its equivalent must be taken before ESLDO

 

Course Title: Leadership and Peer Support

Course Code: GPP3O1, GPP3O8 (for ESL)

Description: This course prepares students to act in leadership and peer support roles.  They will design and implement a plan for contributing to their school and/or community; develop skills in communication, interpersonal relations, teamwork, and conflict management; and apply those skills in leadership and/or peer support roles – for example, as a student council member or a peer tutor. Students will examine group dynamics and learn the value of diversity within groups and communities. 

Prerequisite: Grade 10 Career Studies for GPP3O1, None for GPP3O8 

 

Course Title: Sports and Society

Course Code: IDC3O

Description: This course explores the historical impact of sport upon society. It examines individual sports figures such as Wayne Gretzky, Lionel Messi, Michael Jordan, Christine Sinclair, Tom Longboat, Fanny Rosenfeld and Maurice Richard. The course analysis their contributions to athletics and their influence on society. Students will explore the origins of the Olympics, the effect of athletic events on politics and sports’ relationships to class, gender, leisure and race.  Students will trace the link from amateur sports to professional sports and the impact of business upon sports. The course will examine the evolution, development and philosophical changes in sport.

Course Title: Cooperative Education

Course Code: COOP4O

Description: This course consists of an in school and out of school component for students so that learning and experience are combined in an educationally beneficial way. Students will take advantage of resources available in the community, which are not ordinarily provided in a classroom setting. This course is based on a related course for which a credit has already been granted, which referred to as the “tie-back” course.  Courses in Co-op are planned as multiple credit offerings, and can span either half of the day (2 credits), or a full day (4 credits).

Grade 12 Courses

Course Title: English as a Second Language

Course Code: ESLDO/ESLEO

Description: This course prepares students to use English with increasing fluency and accuracy in classroom and social situations and to participate in Canadian society as informed citizens. Students will develop the oral-presentation, reading, and writing skills required for success in all school subjects. They will extend listening and speaking skills through participation in discussions and seminars; study and interpret a variety of grade-level texts; write narratives, articles, and summaries in English; and respond critically to a variety of print and media texts. 

Prerequisite: ESLCO or its equivalent must be taken before ESLDO, ESLDO or its equivalent must be taken before ESLEO
