What is the Grade 9 EQAO Math Assessment?

In Grade 9, mathematics achievement is measured using the expectations set out in the Ontario curriculum. Students work individually to solve problems, write responses, and complete multiple choice questions. Please note that these assessments are snapshots of a student's performance. These assessments supplement the information teachers collect throughout the year from classroom assessments, daily conversations, and conversations with parents/guardians.

Purpose

The purpose of the Grade 9 EQAO Assessment in Mathematics is to identify strengths and areas for improvement in student learning. Please note that success on this assessment is not a diploma requirement

Components of the Grade 9 EQAO Math Assessment

Students will complete two test booklets. Each booklet will be completed in 60 minutes. A 15-minute break will be provided between booklets. The assessment involves multiple choice questions and extended-response tasks. Different but comparable assessments have been created for students in academic and applied programs.

Strategies for the Grade 9 EQAO Math Assessment

Students will be receiving in-class assistance and/or extra help at lunch, or during Saturday tutorials. Students can access Grade 9 academic or Grade 9 applied tests with accompanying formula sheets for extra practice from the clicking on the EQAO web icon on the right hand side. Also, please note that in order to prepare our students for the upcoming Grade 9 EQAO Math Assessment, Grade 9 students will be writing a Mock Grade 9 EQAO test on May 6, 2019 during a late start with a schedule TBA. The results from the Mock EQAO will be evaluated to determine appropriate remediation for our students.

Test Materials

Students will complete two test booklets and two student answer sheets. Students should bring pencils, an eraser, a scientific or graphing calculator, and a ruler. A highlighter may also be helpful.

Duration of the Grade 9 EQAO Math Assessment

Students will require approximately 2.5 hours to complete the test including breaks. Please note that English Language Learners (ELL) in Grade 9 who have not achieved level 4 support and students with individual learning plans (IEPs) which outline accommodations and supports that are necessary for, and consistent with, regular classroom practices will be given the same accommodations and supports during the Grade 9 EQAO Math Assessment. (e.g. extra time, alternate location to write, the use of assistive technology, large print, etc.) The schedule for that day and room allocation TBA.

Results

The results of the Grade 9 EQAO Math Assessment are released in September of the next school year. Each student will receive an EQAO individual student report recording achievement according to the province's four achievement levels. The provincial standard is Level 3, which corresponds to 70-79%. Please note that this EQAO assessment will count for 10% of each student's final mark in either the academic or applied math course.
