Welcome to DAS!

Downtown Alternative School is a small, alternative elementary public school in the downtown core. More than twenty-five years ago, DAS was begun by a group of parents and teachers with a common vision. They believed in the importance of parent involvement and conflict resolution as two key elements in education. A form of conflict resolution, called "Peacemaking" was developed, and is now used in schools all over the world.

Resolving conflicts in peaceful ways and involving parents in their children's education are still cornerstones of education at DAS, however, a broader more eclectic approach has evolved. There is much emphasis on cooperative learning strategies and multi-age learning opportunities embedded in a context of social justice.

Please come to our Open House for a first-hand understanding of the DAS Learning Community. This will be held on February 06, 2013 at 6:30 p.m. for September 2013.
