School Hours

Morning: Entry bell: 8:46 a.m.

Recess: 10:10 a.m. – 10:20 a.m.

Lunchtime:
The lunch hour: 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Afternoon:
Entry bell: 12:31 p.m.
Recess: 1:55 p.m. – 2:05 p.m.

Kindergarten dismissal: 3:00 p.m.
Dismissal for Grade 1 to Grade 8: 3:15 p.m.
Remediation: 3:15 p.m. – 4:00 p.m.

All students are expected to be on school grounds approximately 5 minutes before the start of classes. Those students arriving after the bell rings should go immediately to the office for a late slip. This ensures that students arriving late are not marked absent and that parents are not worried regarding students who are actually in class.

Attendance, Safe Arrival and Lates

Teachers take attendance immediately following entry into the classroom and send the attendance to the office. Please make sure that the office has your current home and work numbers, as well as your designated emergency contact’s current home and work phone numbers so that we can reach someone at all times.

If we are unable to contact a parent/guardian or the emergency contact provided on the student’s emergency card, the school will initiate the TDSB Safe Arrival Policy directing the principal or vice-principal to contact the police and initiate a search for the missing student.

Please assist us by informing the school office whenever your child is absent. If the office is closed, a recorded message may be left on the school’s answering machine. In your message, please include your child’s name, teacher, the date and the reason for the absence. The school phone number is 416-396-6645.

Please also remember to inform the school immediately if any of your child’s contact names or phone numbers change.

Equity Policy

equity

The Board and our school will ensure that:

  • the curriculum of our school accurately reflects and uses the variety of knowledge of all peoples as the basis for instruction
  • all of our students are provided with equitable opportunities to be successful in our system
  • parents and community groups are provided with equitable opportunities for working with staff and with each other for the benefit of all students
  • students, employees, parents and community partners are provided with effective procedures for resolving concerns and complaints which may arise from their experiences of unfair or inequitable treatment within the school system.

(from the TDSB Equity Foundation Statement)

Homework Policy

The research on homework indicates that some regular work at home can increase student achievement.  For primary students in Grade 1 to Grade 3, with the exception of daily reading, the effect of homework on student achievement is minor. The positive effect of homework on achievement increases only as the age of the child increases.  Children from Grade 4 to high school benefit the most from homework.

Doing homework is an important part of schoolwork.  There are four types of assigned homework.  Each type has a different purpose.

  • Completing work not finished at school.
  • Practicing new skills learned during the day.
  • Preparing work for upcoming lessons and/or projects.
  • Extension activities that expand concepts or skills.

Most homework will take the form of reading, playing games or having discussions with family members.  In the late Primary or Junior grades, homework may become more independent. Homework will not be assigned to students who are going away for an extended period (e.g., a trip to another country). Please click here for more information on the TDSB Homework Policy.

Lunch Routines

Due to the limited facilities and supervision, the lunch program is designed for students who have no one at home over the lunch hour and for whom no other arrangements can be made. Parents must complete, sign and return a “Permission To Stay At School for Lunch” form to the school office. Intermediate students wishing to leave school property for lunch must have a signed note from parents/guardian.  However, they must not return to school with the food purchased off of school property.

First floor classrooms and FDKs:  Eat in classrooms from 11:30 am – 12:00 pm, and then play outside from 12:00 pm – 12:31 pm

Second floor classrooms and ISPs: Play outside from 11:30 am - 12:00 pm, and then eat in classrooms from 12:00-12:30 pm.

Please ensure that all lunch bags and containers are labelled with your child's name and room number.

We are a Platinum Certified Eco School, so we have adopted Litterless Lunches or Boomerang Lunches.  This means that lunches brought to school generate zero waste.  One way to support this is by using reusable containers and refillable water bottles.

Snack Routines

The White Haven Team recognizes the importance of our role in promoting healthy nutrition and an active lifestyle.

Your child is encouraged to bring healthy snacks to eat. Snacks will be eaten in class before students go out for recess. Snacks play an important role in the life of a busy child because being hungry can have a negative impact on academic performance.  It can lead to irritability, disinterest in learning and an inability to concentrate.

Please note peanuts or nut products are not allowed.

Some of the easiest snacks to plan for are fruits or vegetables.  Apples, peaches, plums or grapes just need to be washed before being packed.  Vegetables take a little more time, however a week’s supply can be readied at one time; then just take a handful and pack them.

Nut Allergy and Asthma Alert

nut-free zone

We have many students in our school who are severely allergic to nuts and peanuts.  This is a very serious life-threatening allergy and we all must make a conscious effort to keep these students safe.  For this reason, students are not allowed to bring any food into the school building which contain nuts or peanuts (e.g., granola bars containing nuts, peanut butter, chocolate bars containing nuts or peanuts).

If your child has a serious nut or peanut allergy, they should have two epi-pens, one to keep at home and one to keep at school.  Each year these epi-pens will have to be thrown out and new ones bought.  Please help us to keep your children safe by supporting our efforts to create a peanut/nut free environment.

Students who have asthma must also have an “Asthma Management Plan” completed by their parents for reference in the office.  Part of this plan is to clearly state where their puffers are in the classroom, for use as needed.  When going on a class trip, students must remember to take their puffer and/or epi-pen with them.  Parents may also want to keep a back-up asthma inhaler in the office for their child.  Please remember to fill out and/or update all necessary medical forms and return it to school by the end of the first week of school.
