“We acknowledge that we are hosted on the lands of the Mississaugas of the Anishinaabe, the Haudenosaunee Confederacy and the Wendat. We also recognize the enduring presence of all First Nations, Métis and the Inuit peoples”
At the TDSB, it is customary to acknowledge the Traditional and Ancestral lands of Indigenous peoples at the beginning of all events, gatherings and meetings. All schools also begin their day with the above Land Acknowledgement.
All Balmy staff and students are invited to rise for the Land Acknowledgement, which happens right before the playing of Oh Canada. The goal of the Land Acknowledgement is to bring Indigenous presence and voice into our school; it also provides the opportunity for our Indigenous students and staff to begin their day within their cultural context.
At Balmy Beach, we are committed to providing programs and services that foster mutual respect and reconciliation, and enhance our Indigenous Students’ well-being and achievement. We work in consultation with the TDSB’s Urban Indigenous Education Centre (UIEC), which offers a variety of Indigenous-focused programs and opportunities for students, families and staff. For more information, please visit the UIEC’s website.
