2020-2021 TDSB Student Senate Election

Student Senate Election (2020-21)

The Toronto District School Board is pleased to announce that the Student Senate Election for 2020-21 will be held on Tuesday, January 26 and Wednesday, January 28, including the positions of President, Vice-President, Secretary/Treasurer, Communications Officer, Conference Chair, Alternative School Rep and Learning Centre Reps (In-person Learning and Virtual School).

The mandate of Student Senate is to provide consistent, responsive representation of all TDSB students at the appropriate levels, and to help ensure students' needs and interests are met with the proper attention. This year, to reflect the voices of all students and the way education is currently delivered due to COVID-19, each Learning Centre will have a rep from in-person learning and virtual school.

Interested students are asked to apply online by Friday, December 4. Each position is open to Grade 9 – 12 students, with the exception of the Learning Centre Reps, which is open to Grade 7 – 12 students. Official candidates will be asked to prepare a short campaign video, which will be posted online to promote their candidacy and help students make an informed decision when they vote. Campaign videos will be available from Monday, January 18 to Wednesday, January 27.

Please note that Student Trustees were elected separately in June 2020 for the 2020-21 school year. This election was delayed due to the various impacts of COVID-19.

Attached you will find images to help promote the Student Senate Election.

2019-2020 Year End Newsletter

Principal’s Message

The latter part of this school year has been very different and unexpected due to the arrival of COVID-19. We know that this has been a challenging time as we transitioned to remote learning. We are hopeful that we will see our students this Fall as we know how important it is for them to connect in person with their classmates. On June 19, our Director sent out a survey to all parents and guardians by email. We ask that you take some time to let the Board know your thoughts. Please continue to listen to the news and stay updated as to the Toronto Public Health regulations as they pertain to schools. After August 4th, our Board will announce their plans as to how schools will operate. At this time, we say a fond “farewell” to our Grade Eights as they move on to high school to start a new chapter in their educational journey.

School begins on September 8. We will send out further communication in Late August concerning your child’s class placement.

Report Cards and IEPs (Individual Education Plans) Summaries

These will be sent out electronically by email between June 22 and 26. For those families without an email address, you will receive a copy by mail sometime after June 25. Please note that both report cards and IEPs will not be signed. Once schools reopen, a signed and printed copy of the report card will be placed in your child’s file.

We wish the very best as we say good bye to the following staff members: Ms. Vaughan, Ms. Naraine, Ms. V. Fernando, Ms. DeSilva, Ms. Fu, Ms. Delos Santos, Ms. Wimalantham, Ms. Ryu, Ms. Persad, Mr. Feeney, Ms. Khalid and Ms. Rammohan.

Secondary Program Review Interim Report

The Interim Report of the Secondary Program Review was presented to Trustees last month, a first step in the development of a plan to address the inequities and imbalances throughout our current system. This report supports our next step forward as we start to re-imagine and re-draw our system in consultation and collaboration with our communities to enhance equity and support the achievement and well-being of each and every student in the TDSB, now and in the future.

We want to hear from you! Any recommendations made through this process will have an impact on current elementary students, as young as Grade 1. Our plan, if approved by Trustees in the fall, will create the roadmap for changes to our secondary schools and programs over the next 8 to 10 years.

No specific schools have been named for consolidation and no further steps will be taken without extensive local community consultation. Over the next four months, students, parents, staff and community members can continue to provide feedback and further insight through delegations and their local Trustee, by email to secondaryreview@tdsb.on.ca or on our online form. The Secondary Program Review Final Report will be presented to the Board in October 2020.

Please stay safe and be well.

Message from the Director "Continuation of Learning in the TDSB"

(updated March 29, 2020)

RE: Info Needed - Device & Internet Availability

Dear Parents/Guardians,

To help students stay connected and to support remote learning, the TDSB is lending internet-enabled devices to families who do not have access to devices. As a result, we need some additional information from our families.

We would kindly ask that you click the link below and fill out the following form as soon as possible:

NOTE: If your child(ren) has access to a device such as a desktop, laptop, tablet or iPad with Internet, you do not need to complete this form. Please also note that a mobile phone is not considered a sufficient device for remote learning.

Device and Internet Availability Form

Once again, we thank you for your patience and understanding during this time. We are working to provide additional information and next steps in the coming days.

Director of Education Dr. Malloy message to families

(updated March 25, 2020)

Hello parents/guardians:

The staff here at Ellesmere-Statton P.S. recognizes that this is an extremely challenging time for all of us. We understand children are missing their regular routines and learning.  We also understand parents/guardians may experience anxiety not just trying to provide stability for their children but simultaneously manage their own work either from home or at the workplace. Or some of you may have experienced significant loss of work hours or lost your job entirely. We are all going through this unprecedented circumstance together and the most important thing at the moment is to make sure everyone is healthy and safe. In the meantime, our school board has been working tirelessly with school administrators to ensure there are plans in place to help support our families. Here are a few suggestions we are able to provide for you at this moment.

1).  The most important thing is if any families require any urgent assistance or may have any urgent questions, you may email the Principal Diane.DeiAmoah@tdsb.on.ca or the Vice-Principal Donald.Feng@tdsb.on.ca directly.  Diane and Donald will try their best to get back to you as soon as possible.

2).  Please consistently check your emails for updated communications from TDSB.  If you are not receiving emails from the board, then please email the Vice-Principal so he may update your contact information.

3).  Please consistently check our school website https://schoolweb.tdsb.on.ca/ellesmere/ , our board website www.tdsb.on.ca , and our twitter feed @TDSB_ESPS for updates.

4).  For additional learning resources, please refer to the list below.

5).  Please read our Director of Education Dr. Malloy's letter below.

6).  School playgrounds are officially closed.

As you may already have heard, schools WILL NOT re-open on April 6th.  We will share with you new timelines once our board receives further direction. Ellesmere-Statton administrators and teaching staff have already engaged in a continuous dialogue to gather relevant information, assessing needs, and formulating plans about the continuation of learning.  Once we have further directions, families will be notified.

Families please remember the staff at Ellesmere-Statton is here for you and thinking of you. Please continue to follow the recommendations of Toronto Public Health.

Stay safe

Diane and Donald
