Mathematics Departmet

Assistant curriculum Leader: Ms. Golubovici, ext. #20080

Introduction:
An important part of every course in the mathematics program is the process of inquiry, in which students develop methods for exploring new problems or unfamiliar situations.
Knowing how to learn mathematics is the underlying expectation that every student in every course needs to achieve. An important part of the inquiry process is that of taking the conditions of a real-world situation and representing them in mathematical form. A mathematical representation can take many different forms – for example, it can be a
physical model, a diagram, a graph, a table of values, an equation, or a computer simulation.
It is important that students recognize various mathematical representations of given relationships and that they become familiar with increasingly sophisticated representations as they progress through secondary school. (From Ontario Ministry of Education Curriculum Documents)

Special Program - AP Calculus:

Advanced Placement (AP) The AP Program is an educational endeavor of secondary schools and universities. Through AP courses, high school students engage in university-level study where they participate in classes that are more rigorous than most other high school offerings. Students who choose to successfully complete the AP exams earn not only a Grade 12 credit(s), but also first year University/Advance Placement credit(s). Students applying to American or Canadian universities and colleges also have the opportunity to impress Admissions Departments with a record of successful completion of AP courses. Georges Vanier Secondary School is an AP, Advance Placement certified testing centre. Vanier offers the AP Calculus course. Supplementary sessions are offered to support academic learning and prepare students for the AP exams in Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Economics . AP courses: www.ap.ca or www.collegeboard.com
