WELCOME! THE PURPOSE OF A SCHOOL COUNCIL
School councils in Ontario are regulated by the Ontario Education Act which stipulates that:
The purpose of school councils is, through the active participation of parents, to improve pupil achievement and to enhance the accountability of the education system to parents. O. Reg. 612/00, s. 2 (1).
The Hillcrest School Council aims to support the students and parents at Hillcrest on multiple levels: connections, community and fundraising initiatives.
FUNDRAISING - Fundraising initiatives benefit our school, kids, staff and greater community. Some examples of where fundraising money go are:
Classroom/teacher allocations (each teacher, including librarian, music, gym, and swim instructors, receives funds directly from School Council for classroom improvements)
Outdoor learning (e.g., recess bags, lines drawn for hopscotch, etc.)
School-wide improvements (e.g., hallway signage, school freezer, etc.)
Technology (e.g., tablet protectors, STEM equipment, etc.)
Events and activities (e.g., Author’s Week, buses for field trips, etc.)
Creating equitable programming for our school and community and supporting our community where needed.
EVENTS AND INITIATIVES - Council events and other initiatives help with community engagement, fundraising, or both. Some examples of current initiatives and events are: Pizza Lunch, Winter Market, HillFEST / FunFEST

HOW TO GET INVOLVED
Come join us at one of our monthly meetings, join a committee, or send us an email with your ideas or questions. We want to represent the entire school community and would love to hear about YOUR priorities for your Hillcrest student(s). There are many ways to be involved with Hillcrest including:
Our Monthly Meetings - Please join us on the last Tuesday of the month at 6:30pm for our monthly meeting! You can participate in person (Hillcrest staff room) or on Zoom.

Committees - The school council has a number of committees. Please feel free to join any of them you're interested in or suggest additional ones if you'd like to organize it!
Volunteering - Let us know if you are interested in volunteering with us! We will be looking for volunteers for events and other initiatives throughout the year.
