Good afternoon HCI,

Humberside staff has been in the building this week, engaged in professional development and working to get the school and classes ready for our September 8th start! Students will be able to access their timetables on the TDSB Connect App later today and an electronic copy of timetables will be sent via school messenger to parents/caregivers and students.

I would like to welcome our incoming families and let you know a little bit about how we communicate here at HCI. Each student is assigned both a guidance counsellor and an alpha VP. If you have questions or concerns, please reach out via phone or email to your child's support system. Should you have specific curricular concerns, the best place to begin is with the subject teacher, which will be listed on the timetable. Each week, I send out a weekly bulletin that includes important information about the upcoming week and events. As well, I will include school business and reminders that are integral to your child's success, so please take a moment to go over the items to ensure you haven't missed anything. The weekly bulletins are archived on the HCI School Website for your convenience.

Grade 9 Welcome --> Grade 9 students are asked to go to the back field from 8:45 onwards. Students will be directed to their Day 2/Period 1 teacher, where peer leaders will be supporting with introductions and welcome activities. Teachers will then bring them to their assigned classroom for the remainder of the period. They will follow their Regular Day 2 Schedule for the rest of the day. There will be lots of Peer Leaders around the school property helping to show students where to go!

Humberside Celebrates

HS2HS --> Earlier this week, we had the opportunity to have many of our grade 9s in the school to become a bit more oriented with the space. A big thank you to our Peer Leaders and teacher volunteers who came in to run the day!

 

Gymnasium Upgrade --> I am very pleased to say that both of our gyms received new wall mats. It is a part of our safety guidelines to ensure these are installed in key areas of the gym and we were in desperate need of new ones. Thanks to the generous donations of the school community last year through the direct donation campaign, the school council was able to direct funds to this project, and we wasted no time in purchasing and installing them. We think they look great!

 

School Business

Report Absences or Lates → Parents/guardians/caregivers of students under the age of 18 are encouraged to use the School Messenger App (this app is for parents/guardians ONLY) to report student absences or lates. For the security of safe arrival absence reporting, parents/guardians should set up a Personal Identification Number (PIN) per student. This pin will be required when reporting and explaining absences for this student by phone and will provide an extra level of security and prevent students from reporting their own, unauthorised, absences. Please view the School Messenger Parent/Guardian 4 digit code for instructions on this process. Parents/guardians/caregivers can also call the school directly in order to report an upcoming late/absence.

 

Student Activity Fee --> All students pay the $70.00 Student Activity Card Package Fee. This fee covers: Extra-Curricular Athletics (partial support); Student Council Budget – financial support for clubs; Intramurals; Student Leadership groups and other activities; The School Yearbook, “Hermes”. This will be available for payment on School Cash Online in the near future.

• The individual items in the Student Activity Card (SAC) Package Fee cannot be purchased separately. Students who don’t pay the Student Activity Card Fee (SAC) are not eligible to participate in extra-curricular activities.

Families who have financial needs should speak with their Vice Principal, Mr. Barghout (A – K) or Ms. Tranah (L – Z).

HCI Student Handbook and School Website --> Please use the HCI Student Handbook and the Humberside CI Website as sources of information and to ensure you understand the important policies and procedures that help our school run smoothly and safely. Staff is working on ensuring all information in these two sites is current for the 2026-2027 school year.

 

Start of Year Forms --> In preparation for the beginning of the 2026-27 school year, the Toronto District School Board has emailed all families directly with a link to Start of Year forms for your student(s). Please search for a message from noreplyregistration@powerschool.com sent on August 27 (Secondary) and September 1 (Elementary) and complete the online forms for your student as soon as possible prior to the first day of school on September 8, 2026.
 

A Message From Guidance

Timetable Changes --> Before reaching out to your alpha guidance counsellor, please ensure you understand the important information below.

Students may request a guidance appointment to withdraw or make a course change if:

• Students have an incomplete timetable
• Students completed summer school and need to make a change as a result
• Grade 12 students with 24 earned credits wish to request a spare
• A pathway direction change: course is needed due to a change in post-secondary pathway plan (provide Guidance with information).
• Level Changes

Course Requests Changes WILL NOT be accepted for:

• Preference of course i.e. one elective course for another
• Preference of teacher
• Course Load Balance

From Tuesday, September 8th - Friday, September 11th, students who would like to book a guidance appointment will go to the Library before school, during Lunch, and after school to see a Guidance Counsellor to request the booking.

Students MUST follow their current timetable while they are waiting for their request to be processed.
*Guidance counsellors will open their appointment booking calendars as of September 16, 2026. Any students that require immediate social-emotional support should still go directly to guidance to see their counsellor.

Did You Know?

IT Support for TDSB Students & Families --> To support parents, caregivers, guardians, and students, the TDSB has the School Community IT Support website. Services available include devices, such as Chromebooks, and login assistance with Brightspace, Google Classroom, Microsoft Teams, and School Council Chair accounts.

Support to reset a student password:

Students in Grades 5-12 can also reset their own passwords directly through https://passwordreset.microsoftonline.com once registered for the Self-Service Password Reset (SSPR). Instructions to register for SSPR are available here. Students new to the TDSB will have their password set to the Shared Secret Password. This is a combination of the last 4 digits of the student number, followed by 2 digits for the day of birth, and 2 digits for the month of birth, followed by “@Tdsb” (case sensitive and 13 characters in total).
