We have had a wonderful first week back at school! As I expected, the school got up and running at a record pace, the announcements have been full of reminders of where to go for try-outs and clubs and our student associations have already begun planning for the school year.

Student Activity Fee --> As of today, we have 30% of students having paid their student activity fee. All students are asked to pay the $70.00 Student Activity Card Package Fee. This fee covers: Extra-Curricular Athletics (partial support); Financial support for clubs and Associations; Intramurals; Student Leadership groups and other activities; The School Yearbook, “Hermes”. This is available for payment on School Cash Online.

 

Report Absences or Lates --> Parents/guardians/caregivers of students under the age of 18 are encouraged to use the School Messenger App (this app is for parents/guardians ONLY) to report student absences or lates. For the security of safe arrival absence reporting, parents/guardians should set up a Personal Identification Number (PIN) per student. This pin will be required when reporting and explaining absences for this student by phone and will provide an extra level of security and prevent students from reporting their own, unauthorised, absences. Please view the School Messenger Parent/Guardian 4 digit code for instructions on this process. Parents/guardians/caregivers can also call the school directly in order to report an upcoming late/absence.

Start of Year Forms --> As of today, we have 68% of our mandatory start of year forms completed. The Toronto District School Board has emailed all families directly with a link to Start of Year forms for your student(s). Please search for a message from noreplyregistration@powerschool.com. Student demographic data will be verified using a separate process in the near future.

 

Academic Information and Student Support

IEP Parent/Guardian Consultation Forms --> IEP consultation letters are going home on Monday next week. We really value your input, so please complete the consultation letter so we can best support your child. Completed forms should be returned by students to either their GLE Teacher or Room 112. If you have any questions or concerns, please reach out to Julie Beattie who is the new ACL of Special Education: julie.beattie@tdsb.on.ca

 

School Business

🍎Student Nutrition Program (Morning Grab and Go Breakfast) --> Are you looking for a way to get your volunteer hours without even leaving school? Do you want to do that while working alongside your friends? Would you like to get involved in school life and make new friends? Well the perfect opportunity is waiting for you! Join the Nutrition Program. You can earn volunteer hours by helping out in the mornings with setting up and handing out food to students as they come in before the bell. This is a great way to put yourself out there, get volunteer hours and add this experience to bolster your resume. There's even a chance to get your Food Handler's Certificate. Student Traffic Safety --> We want everyone to be safe this school year! Please consider discussing the following common road safety issues with your HCI student:

• Even if you have the right of way, always check to see if it's safe to cross roads because drivers may be distracted, have medical emergencies, have momentary confusion or emergency vehicles may be approaching the intersection at a high rate of speed.
• Be aware that parked vehicles may back up in parking lots, driveways or on roadways. Give yourself extra space around parked vehicles and pay attention to whether you see rear lights that are on or exhaust, as this could signal that the vehicle may move. Especially if you are on a bike or other form of transportation.
• Be aware of turning vehicles at intersections and make sure you are taking time to cross carefully at 4-way stops. It is very busy at the front of HCI every morning, walkers and drivers alike need to be mindful!
• Near traffic, remove earbuds in order to hear what's happening around you and don't be distracted looking at your phone.
• E-Scooter Safety --> Usage of e-scooters among children and youth continues to grow, as do serious injuries caused by e-scooters! Please remember that e-scooters are not a toy, they are not safe and are not legal to ride in Toronto. Did You Know?

Co-op/SHSM Updates --> The office for all things Co-op and SHSM has relocated to the library. Students with questions about Co-operative Education or Health & Wellness SHSM can stop by the new office, which is located at the back of the library. Our new batch of co-op students are polishing their resumes and working on their job readiness skills. Does anybody need free labour this semester? Let us know!

Special Education and Inclusion Newsletter – September 2026 Edition --> The September 2026 edition of the Special Education and Inclusion Newsletter for Parents/Caregivers is now available on the Special Education and Inclusion site. This monthly newsletter includes important updates, tips, and resources to support students with disabilities and special education needs, and indeed all students.

HAC Highlights of the Week

Athletic Participation --> As a reminder, In order to participate in TDSB inter-school athletics, it is necessary to be a full-time student, have a current Student Activity Card and have your Student Activity Fee paid.

Fall sports are officially getting underway --> Students interested in trying out for a fall team should check the Teams & Tryout Dates link for all upcoming tryout information. Please remember that all students must have their EMA signed before attending a tryout, and students may only participate on one team per season.

Intramurals will also kick off on Tuesday, September 22! Stay tuned for more information from HAC through Grade Google Classrooms, PA announcements, and Instagram @hci_hac.

Finally, if you are a Grade 10, 11, or 12 student who is new to Humberside and would like to try out for a sport this year, please see Ms. Nic in the Upper Gym to pick up a transfer form.

School Council

The first School Council meeting of the year is coming up on Monday, September 22nd at 6:30pm in the school library.

All Humberside parents and guardians are welcome to attend and hear updates from school administrators, student leaders, and learn more about what is going on in the school community.

School Council is pleased to continue offering "Just Ask Jessica": A way to connect with the principal. Have a question for Principal Pearson? Submit it to us by email at humberside.sac@gmail.com. We will group and summarize relevant questions for Ms. Pearson before our next meeting. You can attend the meeting to hear the answers, or read them afterward in our meeting minutes.
