Good afternoon HCI,

We have had our first full week back in the building with staff and students and it went quite smoothly! Our students had their code of conduct assemblies (see info below) and our first fire drill. As we head into the fourth week of 2026-2027 school year, I would encourage you to ask your HCI student how they are getting involved in the community of the school? Are there clubs, teams, associations they are involved in? Are there clubs, teams, associations that they feel are missing? We are getting our HHOC (Husky House of Commons) up and running, which is a place to put in proposals for new clubs and associations. We invite students to let us know what might be missing in the life of the school and/or maybe they don't know that it already exists. In the near future, there will be a fulsome list of all extra-curricular opportunities on the HCI website!

Curriculum Night --> Parents/Caregivers of grade 9 and 10 students are invited to join us at HCI to hear from our teaching staff and Curriculum Leaders about the curricular departments and learn about the different pathways available here at HCI. There is a brief presentation in the auditorium beginning at 6pm, followed by a rotation of subject areas that might be of interest for you and your learner. This is not a 'meet the teacher' event as we have our whole school Parent/Guardian Interviews scheduled later in October when you can speak to specific teachers about your child.

Tuesday, September 29th --> Grade Nine High Park Day! If you are the parent/caregiver to a grade nine student, please check EMA as soon as possible in order to approve this very fun, engaging and student lead team building and spirit building day for your child.

Humberside Celebrates

Views from the Golf Team --> Many of our clubs, teams and councils are well underway. Our golfers got to enjoy a beautiful sunrise this week, as they hit the links! Thank you Mr. Zaph for coaching and capturing the moment.

Worth Repeating

Code of Conduct Assemblies --> This week, we held grade specific assemblies in order to ensure students understand the expectations of being a Humberside Student. We ask that you also reinforce the content of our assembly, available here and posted in the HCI Student Handbook, with your child. If your child was absent on Tuesday, September 15th, please review the slides with them.

Student Activity Fee --> As of today, we have 50% of students having paid their student activity fee (20% more than last week!) All students are asked to pay the $70.00 Student Activity Card Package Fee. This fee covers: Extra-Curricular Athletics (partial support); Financial support for clubs and Associations; Intramurals; Student Leadership groups and other activities; The School Yearbook, “Hermes”. This is available for payment on School Cash Online. If you require financial assistance for this fee, please reach out to your child's alpha VP.

From your Guidance Office

Student timetables --> changes have been completed and students are settling into their classes. Thank you everyone for your patience as we worked through this busy time. We enjoyed meeting over a hundred students over the past week.

Guidance Google Classrooms are up and running --> This is an important resource for one-stop shopping for information on volunteer opportunities, timely updates from our department, scholarship opportunities and more. We encourage students to accept our invitation or join on their own using the following codes:

Guidance Appointments --> Students may now book appointments using our Guidance Student Appointment link.

Coming Soon --> Guidance counsellors will be meeting with all Grade 12 students during their Period 1 class to go over Post-Secondary Planning.

Post Secondary Information --> Just a note that students are now able to create their OUAC (Ontario Universities Application Centre) www.ouac.on.ca . Students will need their OEN (this can be found on the report card or Student Status Sheet). The deadline for applications isn't until January 15, 2027, but we recommend students familiarize themselves with the website.
Ontario University Fair is September 26-27 at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre https://www.ouevents.ca/

Application for college will open on September 26 www.ontariocolleges.ca. I have posted information on this process as well. The equal consideration date is February 1st, 2027.

HAC Highlights of the Week

Fall Sports Update --> Thank you to all of our student-athletes for coming out and showing your interest in Huskies Athletics! With tryouts wrapping up, our fall sports season is starting to get underway. Congratulations to our golfers, who competed in the Northwest Regional Qualifiers this past Wednesday at Humber Valley! We also want to wish our Field Hockey team good luck as they compete in a pre-season tournament at UofT this Monday. Stay tuned for more Huskies Athletics updates as our teams get their seasons started!

Terry Fox Run/Walk --> Get ready, Huskies! Humberside’s annual Terry Fox Run is happening on Thursday, October 8, and this year’s theme is Canadian Sports! Come dressed to represent your favourite Canadian team or sport as we come together to support cancer research and work towards our $5,000 fundraising goal! Activities will take place throughout the event and continue into lunch, with HAC selling Pizzaiolo and other clubs and councils hosting booths and activities - more details to come! Help us reach our goal by donating to Humberside’s Terry Fox Run. Every donation counts!

Flag Football Intramurals --> Flag Football Intramurals are here! A huge thank you to all of the teams who signed up to participate this year! Games officially kick off Tuesday September 22nd at lunch on the Backfield. The full schedule will be posted on the Grade Google Classrooms and on Instagram @hci_hac, so make sure to check when your team is playing. We’re looking forward to a fun intramural season - see you on the field!

School Council

The first Humberside School Advisory Council meeting of the school year is on Tuesday, September 22, 2026, at 6:30 p.m. in the school library.
We meet on the fourth Tuesday of most months, and everyone is welcome to attend. You don’t need to be a Council member to join us.
You can review the agenda for next Tuesday's meeting . Minutes from previous Council meetings can be found online.

Just Ask Jessica --> Before every School Advisory Council meeting, we invite parents and caregivers to submit questions for Ms. Pearson. This feature is intended for general topics rather than questions about individual students or teachers, and all questions are kept anonymous.
You can attend the meeting to hear the answers, or read them afterward in our meeting minutes. Take a look at all of the questions that were asked and answered last year here.
