Good afternoon HCI,
Unbelievably, September is coming to a close, and it’s clear that our school year is off to a strong and positive start. This week, HCI hosted our grade nine and ten Curriculum Night and we had many families come to hear about our subject based curriculum, our guidance team, student success, special education, specialist high skills majors and our clubs. Our Peer Leaders helped the families as they got to walk from classroom to classroom to experience life at HCI.
In case you hadn't heard from your child yet, our student nutrition program is up and running. Every morning, volunteer staff and students provide a healthy 'grab and go' breakfast to the school population. We encourage students to be on time to receive this and to come down to the main office, in between classes, should they need a snack during the day.
On Wednesday, we will recognize the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. To mark this important day, we encourage everyone to wear orange. Established in 2013, Orange Shirt Day honours the survivors of residential schools, remembers the children who never returned home, and acknowledges the lasting impacts on First Nations, Métis, and Inuit communities. By wearing orange, we commit to truth-telling, learning, and ongoing reconciliation.

Save the Date
Tuesday, October 20th --> Caring and Safe School Committee: Every year, each school in the board is responsible for convening a Caring and Safe Schools Committee. This committee reviews and presents ways to address concerns related to safety and wellbeing in the school community. The committee MUST have student, teacher, parent and administrative representation. Meetings will happen on Tuesdays after school, from 4:30-5:30pm, and will be held once every other month (approximately 4-5 meetings in a school year). If you are interested in joining this committee, please email Adrienne Tranah (adrienne.tranah@tdsb.on.ca) before the end of next week (October 2, 2026). Our first meeting will take place on Tuesday, October 20, 2026.
HCI Celebrates
Committee for Indigenous Allies Club --> The important learning and sharing related to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission began last week when our club members created a place for students to sample cedar tea, homemade bannock and to learn about our Calls to Action. Thank you Mr. Bangma and club members!
A Window into the Classroom
HCI Library --> Our school library has been buzzing with activity this week! Not only do teachers often book the space, and students utilize the different types of learning areas, but we also host important presentations. This week we hosted our Guidance dept. for specialized presentations with Grade 12 students, focusing on the essential steps for college and university applications.
School Business
TDSB Connect App --> Some iPhone users may be unable to log in to the TDSB Connects because the app incorrectly says they are using an older version, even when the latest version is installed.
Temporary workaround: On the iPhone, go to Settings → General → Language & Region and set English as the preferred language. Then try logging in again. IT Services is working on a permanent fix.
Student Activity Fee Update --> Our yearly fee is an important way to ensure the school can continue to run all of the amazing clubs, teams and associations. We now have 56% of the school population having paid this fee, please check your School Cash Online in order to complete this transaction. Should your child be on a sports team, and you have not yet paid this fee, you will be receiving communication asking you to complete this. Students who don’t pay the Student Activity Card Fee (SAC) are not eligible to participate in extra-curricular activities and will not receive a yearbook.
*Families who have financial need should speak with their Vice Principal, Mr. Barghout (A – K) or Ms. Tranah (L – Z), as no student will be left out for this reason.
HAC Highlights of the Week
Fall Sports Update -->The fall athletics season is officially getting underway, and the Huskies are off to a great start! The Varsity Girls Field Hockey Team got things started in a big way, taking home the championship at their pre-season tournament at UofT! An awesome way to kick off the season! Over on the golf course, 12 Huskies golfers represented Humberside at the Regional Championships at Humber Valley. Congratulations to Isabel for qualifying for the City Championships! Also a huge shoutout to Daniel, who delivered one of the highlights of the day with an incredible hole-in-one! With most of our fall teams beginning competition over the next few weeks, there’s lots of Huskies action still to come. Stay tuned for more updates!
Terry Fox Run/Walk --> Get ready, Huskies! Humberside’s annual Terry Fox Run is coming up on Thursday, October 8, and this year’s theme is Canadian Sports! We’ve raised just over $1,000 so far, but we still have a ways to go to reach our $5,000 fundraising goal, so let’s keep it going! You can help us get closer to our goal by donating to Humberside’s Terry Fox Run here - every donation makes a difference! Come dressed to represent your favourite Canadian team or sport and join us for the run, followed by a post-run celebration at lunch. HAC will be selling Pizzaiolo, and other Humberside clubs and councils will be running booths and activities. Let’s come together as a school, have some fun, and make this year’s Terry Fox Run a great one!
Flag Football Intramurals --> Flag Football Intramurals have officially wrapped up their first week of games! Thanks to everyone who came out and got the season started. Want to see where your team stands or when you play next? HAC is excited to introduce our new Flag Football Intramurals website, where you can check out your team’s schedule, scores, and updated standings all season long. School Council
Nominations Open for HCI School Advisory Council --> Thank you to everyone who attended the first HCI School Advisory Council meeting this week. It was a fantastic turnout and we heard great updates from our admin team and student leaders.
- Nominations for the 2026/27 HCI School Advisory Council (SAC) are now open.
If you wish to nominate yourself, or another HCI parent/guardian, to become an ongoing member of the School Advisory Council, and you will be available to attend most of the meetings (generally the 4th Tuesday of the month at 6:30pm), please send an email with your name, and the name(s) and grade(s) of your students attending Humberside to humberside.sac@gmail.com.
Your name will be included in the virtual election on October 9, 2026. The council will meet in October to select the executive positions from the elected members. A description of the executive positions can be found here . If you are not generally available for the Tuesday evening meetings, but have a special interest like fundraising or communications, or another way you'd like to contribute, please send us that information in an email and we will put you on a committee list.
Keep in mind that you and any parent are welcome to attend any regular School Advisory Council meeting regardless of whether you are a SAC member.
The next scheduled School Advisory Council meeting is on Tuesday, October 27, 2026 at 6:30pm in the school library.
