HCI Weekly Bulletin

Weekly Bulletin - October 5 - 9, 2026

Monday, October 05, 2026 08:10 AM

Good afternoon HCI,

We can't believe the weather we are having as we head into the fall season! It has allowed for some great outdoor events and enjoyment of the grounds here at HCI. You will notice that our clubs/teams/associations often use instagram to publicise upcoming events and information, which can be a great way to stay connected. If you are not an instagram user, please know that the grade google classrooms (for announcements) also has the same information.

From time to time I will share a tech safety tip that could be the beginning of a good discussion with your teen: Does your teen have their school and graduation year in their profiles on social media? Ask them to show you what identifying information they are posting. By sharing this on social media platforms, they are providing enough information for data mining on age and location which can be used for extortion and threatening behaviour. I would encourage all social media users to remove any identifying information.

Please see below for information for the upcoming week!

Save the Date

Informal Mark Update → Your child’s teachers will be communicating with you regarding an informal student update. This may come in the form of an email, phone call, or access to the learning platform with an accurate grade. Teachers are asked to have completed this update on or before October 15th.

Humberside Celebrates

National Custodial Workers’ Recognition Day → October 2nd is a day to take a moment and recognize the important work our caretaking staff do to keep our building safe and clean! A big thank you to our HCI team, the staff, students and community appreciate all you do!

A Window into the School

CYW Introduction → One of our school based supports here at HCI is through Silvia Skoutarou, our Child and Youth Worker (CYW). Silvia has a confidential space in guidance where she works with students on all things social-emotional or just to support through some of the things our young people might need some mentorship to navigate. She is a wonderful asset to the school community, and students will often see her during the morning breakfast program as well. Referrals to the CYW go through your child’s guidance counsellor or Vice Principal.

Worth Repeating

Student Activity Fee Update → Thank you to everyone who has already paid the Student Activity Fee, we are now at 60% of the school having purchased. For context, we have over 40 clubs/councils running this year! This does not include our teams (competitive and intramural). Much of the Activity Fee goes directly to supporting these student based activities; with the remainder supporting the creation of the yearbook. If you have not yet made this purchase, please do so via School Cash Online.
Students who don’t pay the Student Activity Card Fee (SAC) are not eligible to participate in extra-curricular activities and will not receive a yearbook.
*Families who have financial need should speak with their Vice Principal, Mr. Barghout (A – K) or Ms. Tranah (L – Z), as no student will be left out for this reason.

Academic Information

Course Outlines → Teachers have been distributing course outlines to their classes this week. These are important documents that review course expectations, mark breakdowns and specifics regarding how your child can demonstrate learning and participation in each subject area. Should you have questions about a course outline, please reach out to your child’s teacher as a first point of contact.

HAC Highlights of the Week

Fall Sports Update → Huskies Athletics had a busy and exciting week across the city! The Varsity Girls Basketball Team had a great start to their season, winning their pre-season tournament at Northern Secondary School, while the Junior Boys Volleyball Team finished second at the ECI Tournament! Our Cross Country Team competed in their first mini meet of the season at Stan Wadlow, and our Golf Team wrapped up their season at the City Championships. Congratulations to all of our athletes and coaches, and stay tuned for more Huskies action as the fall season continues!

Terry Fox Run/Walk → Humberside’s annual Terry Fox Run is coming up on Thursday, October 8, and this year’s theme is Canadian Sports! We’ve already raised over $3,000 toward our $5,000 fundraising goal, but we still need your help to get there! Every donation makes a difference, so be sure to donate to Humberside’s Terry Fox Run here if you can.
On October 8, come dressed to represent your favourite Canadian team or sport and take part in the run (during your period 2 class), followed by a school-wide celebration at lunch! HAC will be selling Pizzaiolo, an ice cream truck will be on site, and several Humberside clubs and councils will be hosting booths and activities beside the tennis courts. Let’s keep the fundraising going and make this year’s Terry Fox Run a great day for the Humberside community!

Flag Football Intramurals → Week 2 of Flag Football Intramurals is complete! Thanks to everyone who came out and played this week. Be sure to check the HAC Flag Football Intramurals website to keep up with your team’s schedule, scores, and updated standings. Check out the HAC Flag Football Intramurals website here!

School Council

Nominations for the 2026/27 HCI School Advisory Council (SAC) are now open --. If you wish to nominate yourself, or another HCI parent/guardian, to become an ongoing member of the School Advisory Council, and you will be available to attend most of the meetings (generally the 4th Tuesday of the month at 6:30pm), please send an email with your name, and the name(s) and grade(s) of your students attending Humberside to humberside.sac@gmail.com.

Your name will be included in the virtual election on October 9, 2026. The council will meet in October to select the executive positions from the elected members. A description of the executive positions is available in last week's bulletin. If you are not generally available for the Tuesday evening meetings, but have a special interest like fundraising or communications, or another way you'd like to contribute, please send us that information in an email and we will put you on a committee list.

Keep in mind that you and any parent are welcome to attend any regular School Advisory Council meeting regardless of whether you are a SAC member.

The next scheduled School Advisory Council meeting is on Tuesday, October 27, 2026 at 6:30pm in the school library.

Happy Friday!
