HCI Weekly Bulletin

Weekly Bulletin - October 12 - 16

Friday, October 09, 2026 02:47 PM

Good afternoon HCI,

There are a lot of great things to celebrate below and exciting information to read about upcoming events. That being said, I would like to take a moment to ask you to please have a discussion with your HCI student over the weekend. Administration and our SBSMs (school-based safety monitors) are finding that our washrooms are being damaged, specifically the male washroom. The stalls and washroom doors are being torn from the walls and damaged to the point of having to lock the bathroom until they can be fixed. Every time this happens, I work with caretaking to put in a work order to have it repaired. These repairs are paid for directly from the school budget. What I am asking is that you speak to your child about what it means to be a Humberside Citizen. How can each of us play a part in ensuring our washrooms are safe to use for all students? We will continue to monitor washrooms through our frequent washroom checks and we are eager to partner with the school community to ensure all HCI citizens are playing a part in keeping our school safe.

HCI Celebrates

(NEW) Fall Sports Update - Huskies Sports Centre --> The fall athletics season is in full swing, and there’s lots happening across Huskies Athletics! We’re excited to introduce the new Huskies Sports Centre, where students and families can stay connected with all of our teams throughout the season. Each team’s schedule is posted on the site, and results will be updated weekly so you can keep up with how our Huskies are doing. Check out the Huskies Sports Centre!!

Terry Fox Run/Walk --> A huge thank you to everyone who participated in this year’s Terry Fox Run/Walk! As a school community, we came together to raise over $6,000! A special shoutout to all the staff and students who showed their Canadian sports spirit, took part in the activities along the route, and joined us for our lunchtime celebration! Thank you to all the clubs and councils who helped bring this event to life and make it such a success.

A Window into the Classroom

SHSM (Specialist High Skills Major) → Our Health and Wellness Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM) students had a blast at their Innovation, Creativity, and Entrepreneurship (ICE) training in partnership with the Toronto and Region Conservation Authority (TRCA). They learned a little bit about bird migration, reflected on their role as environmental steward, and gained a valuable certification along the way.

Geography and Art: Exploring the Land --> This week Ms. Tsanos hosted 18 classes on our Indigenous Floor Map. Students were able to interactively explore connections to the land and the Indigenous origins of our country. Simultaneously, our art students were exploring the beautiful landforms of Canada as seen from above, with Mr. Kokai.

Math Problem of the Week → Each week starting in October, HCI’s Math Club Infinity posts a Mild, Medium, and Spicy “Problem of the Week” in our Google Classroom and outside room 214. These enrichment problems give students a chance to stretch their thinking, practice creative problem-solving, and prepare for upcoming math contests. For every solution submitted, students receive a ballot for the math club’s monthly raffle and towards the grand end of the year prize! While participation is optional, we encourage all students to give it a try! Students can access problems and upload their solutions in our HCI Math Club Infinity Google Classroom using the code bobi2lh.

Academic Information

Math Contests at Our School → We are excited to share that our school offers students the opportunity to participate in a variety of math contests throughout the year. These contests encourage problem-solving, critical thinking, and creativity while allowing students to challenge themselves beyond the classroom. Participating students are encouraged to join the HCI Math Club Infinity Google Classroom to access past contests and solutions using the code bobi2lh. More information about upcoming contests, registration instructions, fees, and how students can get involved can be found here. This opportunity is optional for students. Please only register your child if they are interested.

Math Help at HCI → Our school offers daily math help support through drop-in sessions, one-on-one support, and online resources. Daily math help is provided by our HCI math department. Please visit here for teacher availability and location. Students are welcome to visit any math teacher for support. We also offer a Drop In JR Math Cafe in room 201 which is open to grade 9 & 10 students to work on their math homework and get peer and teacher support as they deepen their understanding of the math concepts they are learning. Additional math help information, online resources, and links can be found here in our HCI Math Help Poster. Please encourage your child to take advantage of these opportunities to build their confidence.

School Business

International Trip Opportunity → Humberside’s Science Department is planning a field trip for grade 11 and 12 students interested in biology and environmental science to focus on learning about ecology, chemistry and biodiversity in Costa Rica. The proposal is a six-day trip that spans the Easter holiday long weekend in March 2027. Please have your student join our Google Classroom with code qbnzk2tp for more information while we await approval.

Student Activity Fee Update --> Our yearly fee is an important way to ensure the school can continue to run all of the amazing clubs, teams and associations. We now have 63% of the school population having paid this fee, please check your SchoolCashOnline in order to complete this transaction. Should your child be on a sports team, and you have not yet paid this fee, you will be receiving communication asking you to complete this. Students who don’t pay the Student Activity Card Fee (SAC) are not eligible to participate in extra-curricular activities and will not receive a yearbook.
*Families who have financial need should speak with their Vice Principal, Mr. Barghout (A – K) or Ms. Tranah (L – Z), as no student will be left out for this reason.
