Inglewood Heights is a GOLD level EcoSchool! We are trying to do our part to save the environment. Through the EcoSchools program, students become aware of their carbon footprint and incorporate ways to reduce waste, conserve energy, and be responsible stewards of the environment. We are always striving to improve and to maintain our Platinum level each school year. Students are currently participating in the following programs:

Composting

Students are making an effort to compost in order to reduce the amount of garbage that goes to landfills. Each classroom has its own mini compost bin and assigns students to empty them into a green bin. Students also make sure that garbage and recyclables are not thrown into the compost bins.

Litterless Lunches

Students bring litterless lunches to school. Lunches are placed into reusable containers. They also bring reusable drink containers. Stainless steel forks and spoons are used instead of disposable cutlery. Litterless lunches are an attempt to reduce the amount of packaging and waste we throw into the garbage.  Students are expected to bring home any uneaten food, garbage and recycling for proper disposal.

Recycling Thursdays

Every Thursday, students help collect recycling bins from each class. With the supervision of Mr. Bob, our Caretaker, the Recycling Team puts the recycling into big recycling bins to prevent overflow, and prepare it for City pick up.

Lights Out

Staff and students are now making sure that lights are being turned off when they leave their classrooms. Computer monitors are also being turned off in order to conserve energy. We are auditing the number of lamps we will need to provide effective lighting throughout the school. Unnecessary light bulbs will be removed. We are also monitoring light usage to determine and reduce the amount of electricity consumption for each class.

The Gardening Club is a Big Success!

As part of being an environmentally responsible school, a gardening club has been started. The gardening club provides an opportunity to help students become responsible stewards for the environment. Students take part in planting fruits, vegetables, and flowers. They learn to turn over and aerate the soil, plan bulbs and seeds, fertilize and water the garden.
