Principal's Message

Welcome to John Buchan Senior Public School! Our school boasts strong academic excellence, diverse opportunities and community connections for our students, staff and parents. Our caring and professional staff use differentiated and high yield teaching learning strategies that focus on meeting the needs of all learners. We have ambitious and creative students who are actively involved in earning Buchan Points to showcase their academic, leadership, character, athletic and personal growth in the school and larger community. Buchan truly is a learning environment where inspiration lives.

Highlights of 2019-20 include 15% of our students achieving Honour Roll status, our first Buchan-Leacock Community Fun Fair, STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) learning opportunities that include use of our newly refreshed Design and Technology studio and 3-D printer and parent engagement sessions through MSIC (Model Schools Inner City). We are also proud of our ongoing collaboration with our campus partners, Stephen Leacock C.I. and Pauline Johnson Jr. P.S., with music concerts, schoolwide presentations, Remembrance Day assembly and academic and interest clubs (e.g., Robotics and Dance Clubs).

Last year, our dedicated staff offered 131 out of classroom opportunities for our students that included teams, clubs, presentations, field trips, Winter Activity Day and many leadership experiences. While each year offers different opportunities to match the skills and interests of our students and staff, we are well on our way to a similar number of diverse experiences for our students this year.

As a school, we actively promote a strong student voice through our Student Leadership Council. Elected by their peers and representing each class, our Student Leadership Council has spearheaded social justice fundraisers for Free the Children, as well as providing social opportunities for all students to interact with each other outside the classroom (e.g., school spirit weeks, socials and intramurals). This year, we are also focusing on student voice by asking the question, “What’s your legacy?” to engage our students to reflect on how they can make Buchan better by their having been at the school.
